What happened with the history book?

I dunno...it was going to be published and I was told it was close and then nowt.

I've had the idea of putting together a season book, with a mixture of match reports, photo's, officials and supporters opinions and interviews etc., etc. Some funny annitdotes and articles from the web site, programme, forum and papers....

As the interviews for the programme now takes in a wider view (and as I conduct them) and I have access to match reports and photo's, it wouldn't take a major effort to pull it all together.

Just would need to find someone to print and publish the thing at a price that would be reasonable but make a bit for the club. Now that maybe the hard part...

But, I'll give it a go, if people wanted it.

A couple of years ago some dude was putting together a history of BTFC book.

Did he give up?

I'd guess that the trouble with writing a History book is that it's difficult to know when to stop!

If I remember correctly Mark Kettlety was putting this together. He used to edit our matchday programmes before the current outfit took over.

Haven't seen him for ages at New Lodge.

If anyone can contact him and ask the question on its status, he may be in a position to hand over what he has completed beforehand.

As he runs his own publishing company he may still be interested in publishing it.

I e-mailed Mark last night about this and he has asked me to post this reply on here:

"I have explained all of this on the forum before, but obvoiusly some people never saw it.

The problem was that most of the onfo came from Len Dewson and has he had only been at the club since 1972 (which is still a long time), then there were no other records kept. Even Lens had gaps in the stats which I tried about 6 different libraries for old newspapers. I did manage to fill some of these in, but there were far too many gaps in seasons.

I also tried going back into librarires and going back even further, but every season I tried since about 1920, I would find the first 3 results of a season and then nothing for about 6 weeks, then another 2 results and then nothing for another 6 weeks etc. Every season was the same. In the end I just gave up but I had nowhere else to turn to and then sadly Len passed away. I gave all of the info, stats and photographs from Len to the club as his widow no longer wanted them in the house.

This was a shame as I had alread spent hundreds of hours on this book and as someone rightly says that I am now in publishing, then the printing and production would not have been a problem. If Gazza wants to try and do a seasonal stats book, then maybe with what he has, I could fill in what gaps I can for him.

The main problem was that we were a junior club until 1971 & results were simply not kept and local newspapers never carried anything on us. "

ok, but would anyone want to read a book which was filled with nothing but stats...I wouldn't

One of our best modern day history programs (match of the day) has it sussed, it shows us facts, but misses out the boring bits, it only shows us the games it has footage for, and it asks some knowledgeable individuals to give their thoughts on certain games or situations

and Millions watch that..

Even if the book had sporadic coverage of the early years (a few old\pics and reports) and majored on the 70s (especially the 3 vase winning seasons) - I'd buy it.

I'm sure enought material could be gathered on the Vase winning season's alone:

Local press coverage of the games - before AND after

Pictures

Reprints of the Programmes and tickets

Where are they now/player stories

etc.

A phrase springs to mind, talk is cheap but bricks build houses.....I’m like the London brick company right now…

But as for the book and its viability, If mark has something more than stats and pics, (we have them anyway) i.e., a partially completed project, then he can, if he want's to, bring it to me, and I will look into the financial viability of the project.

OK finney....I shall consider my wrists sufficiently slapped...

I see things with a very clear, but dyslexic picture view. The problem is, no other fcker is looking through my eyes.

The book, I can't see it getting done, I hope I'm wrong though

Actually TC, I have been contacted by someone (no names mentioned until I have spoken to you) that wants to to do a book. I'll speak to you tonight and bring the e mail correspondance and you can peruse the offer and go forward from there.

The person in question has been involved with publications of this sort before...

See ya tonight
