Club Kicks Off Its Bid For Youngsters Pitch

Canvey Island FC are planning to build a junior football pitch next to their Park Lane ground as part of the clubs restructuring.

Youngsters aged 7 to 10 affilated to the club used to play at Waterside Farm Sports Centre, but more recently the club has been relying on the support of local schools to provide training facilities when the first team are using the Park Lane pitch for their own sessions.

The club now hopes to get the go-ahead to licence an area of grassland to the south of their club home in Leigh Beck Recreation Ground.

The club will take responsibility for the upkeep of the pitch, which is likely to be 60m by 40m in size, and has indicated that it would carry out some landscaping to improve the condition of the site.

They would also carry out a consultation exercise and seek the views of local residents on the proposals.

Chief executive of CIFC, Keith Johnson said the pitch was important for the club to move forward and develop the young players of the future.

He said "We have got a number of youth teams, from under 7s to under 18s, and we need another facility for them to train on during the evening when the first team are training at Park Lane.

This is important for us. We really need the space. The first team we have got now is virtually the reserve team from last season and most of them have come through the youth system with our manager John Batch, and have been with us a long time."

Councillors are set to discuss the issue at a meeting of the enviroment committee next Tuesday.

If agreed by the council and local residents, the club would hope to begin using the new facility for the start of the 2007/8 season.
