As the teams came out to Status Quo’s Rockin’ all over the World, two sides of the ground were full of emptiness, with the bulk of the 150 strong crowd all clustered in the bar or behind the goal. An ethereal roof of mist lay above the ground, with its fingers reaching from pylon to pylon. ‘Side started strongly, forcing three corners in the first three minutes, all taken by Diaczuk, although all were safely dealt with, by Bostock, Brightly and McFarlane in that order.

 

It looked like it was going to be a balls out night, as four had already been sent into the swirling mist. Diaczuk made it a fourth ball when his hard volley disappeared into the mists of time, whilst on the wing Lee McDowell playing well, even if he did look more like the ex-Urchin Lance McDowell – did the wrong name go onto the team sheet or was it a typo?

 

Hornchurch picked up a gear and Collins, resplendent once again in his white Mizunos, set up Simon Parker with a short corner, but the chance was lost when Carter tackled. Amos Foyewa then intercepted a mishit clearance and raced along the wing, but was stopped by Cordell. Another corner to Hornchurch, taken once again by Collins, and up strode John Purdie to cannon in a header which was a certain goal until the ball was handled on the line for a ….. well nothing at all as the referee missed it.

 

When Adam Parker was fouled as he cut into the penalty area the resulting Collins free kick was met by McFarlane, whose header was well saved by keeper Bowtell, but pressure was finally rewarded when Bostock played a very long ball up into the goalmouth, McFarlane headed on, and ADAM PARKER cracked the ball home. Just before the interval another loud hand ball appeal went unpenalised.

 

At half time a prolonged search was made on the pitch, but the lace which was taken out of the ball could not be found, whilst above the pitch the mist weaved Dracula patterns, and behind the goal we had the Barkingside version of the northern lights, when the mist combined with the yellow street lights to give a local orange coloured aurora borealis, much cheaper than going to Lapland.

 

The second half started with Kevin Harvey being booked for a foul on Adam Parker after just 25 seconds – it would have been quicker had the referee located his pencil first time. Two successive corners from Collins went across goal, and a long throw from Bostock was headed close by Gasper, whilst a first time turn and shot by Simon Parker rebounded off the post, and another hard shot from Foyewa knocked a white coated chav down the grass banking, apt reward for watching the match for free outside the ground. Tomlinson went close and then we had a classic shout from the extremely vocal home bench, aimed at the home number three – ‘either go [****!!****] tight or stay in there’.

 

McDowell sent over a dangerous looking corner, which Brightly held, and then the best move of the match, involving Foyewa, Tomlinson, Simon and Adam Parker, and Collins, ended when Bowtell saved Collins’ hard shot. Bowtell then missed a Collins free kick, and Gasper almost crept in behind the defence, whilst two McDowell corners created danger at the other end. Brightly gave everyone a fright when he raced out to punch clear, and got very close to the edge of the area in so doing, and the northern lights now illuminated the area right behind the goal. A Collins corner found Tomlinson, but Bowtell saved, and Foyewa twice found space but lost the ball at the last hurdle, the hurdle in question being a home defender. An Adam Parker free kick was cleared off the line, and two more bookings followed as the home side became somewhat frustrated, no doubt urged on by the non stop flow of invective that passed as encourage from the home bench. Almost of time, Simon Parker put Foyewa through but the chance was hit high over the bar.

 

Not a good display by any means, in what was at times a game of head tennis, with the ball being booted from one end to the other. But something almost unique in football – no subs were used. The mist thickened up towards the end, and was so thick in some of the surrounding roads that it was impossible to see your hand behind your back.
