folkestone score updates

A great result and fighting spirit from the team. The first half was dire though. I don't know what it is but the conditions favoured our passing game and we insisted in mixing it with Folkestone with the lump up field all the time...and we don't play that stratagy all that well. Credit to Folkestone though, when we did get the ball on the ground they hassled us.

Folkestone's first goal came about a through ball being played, Worster calling and coming out and then realising, whoops, perhaps he shouldn't. You can't knock him though, he certainly didn't let that mistake get on top of him and recovered to make some great saves throughout the game. His overall performance was very good.

Nathan's goal was from a cross from Whelpdale...Nathan rose (like a graceful salmon according to Simon), to put the ball in the back fof the net. Five minutes later, Folkestone went back in front...it made you wonder if this was going to be our day. Their goal was due to some poor marking from a corner kick.

The second half we started to play the ball on the ground and certainly looked better for it. About halfway through the second half Chris Whelpdale fired a shot accross the goalkeeper to score. Then for a period Folkestone didn't let us out of our half but they looked the more flustered of the two teams and were snatching at chances and making some last ditch tackles. Our fitness started to show through and after being battered about (nice elbow in the face off the ball which the ref and the linesman missed), Nathan was subsitutde and Ricky Burbridge came on. His goal was certainly well taken and was the result of some intelligent running off the ball (so intelligent, I was surprised he had possesion when he rounded round the back of the defence) and a great cross from Whelpdale. There was certainly some great behind the goal celebrations between the supporters!!!

As you can read, our second half performance was fantastic and in the end it was a well deserved win.

Well done the lads

First time this season I'd been tempted beyond the county border to watch the Blues; and at Half Time I was wondering why I'd bothered! Dire, scrappy unintelligent football that left me thinking I'd be better off joining the Missus at Ashford Shopping Village. At least I could keep an eye on the Credit Card that way!

But, as they say, it's a game of two halfs. We were a different side after the break and the 75th minute equaliser was always on the cards. I'd have settled for a replay at that stage, but Rikki Burbridge hadn't read the script! As soon as he'd recieved that ball from Whelpdale (a couple of minutes after coming on?) something in my head said "winner". A fantastic shot that left them stunned. Theres something about Rikki that excudes confidence when he has the ball within shooting range.

Five or six minutes of very proffesional possesion football followed, when we probably looked the best we'd played all game.

So we've done it again. Recovered a deficit and gone on to win. Can we please just do it the easy way next time!

Mixed bag of good and bad this one... For the first hour we were poor in possession, no idea why the players felt that punt and chase tactics were the right way to go against a team of 6 footers.

Interesting substitution, Christmas Tree formation anyone?

Elder

Whelpdale Hodges

Game Hunter Hill

McSweeney Heffer Blewitt Kerrigan

Worster

The good was that when we finally woke up to the fact that we needed to pass the ball better we looked a different proposition and scored 3 well taken goals.

Very pleased for Burbridge, when he's fit I think he'll be a good player for us. There was a lot of pressure on that shot, but he showed a cool head.

A real Jeckyll and Hyde performance from us.

The first half was very strange as we kept aimlessly hoofing the ball upfield (Hodges and Whelpdale were completely bypassed) and I was quite pleased to go in only one behind.

As said, once we worked out we should try and do what we're best at, we looked a different team and it was great to nick a late winner as I would happily have settled for the draw at that stage.

Oddly enough although being far from our best quite a lot of positives:

1) Two straight wins (away at that!!) for the first time this season.

2) Three very well taken goals - It's great to see Nathan back to his best and first Billericay goals for Whelpdale and Burbridge.

3) The quality we can bring on from the bench.

4) £3250 earned in the last week for the club.

I would play the same back 5 against Dagenham as we seem to have lost a bit of our early season stinginess and need to try and put that right.

All-in-all take an away win any time and hopefully we can get a nice home draw in the next round.

I hope my Christmas tree doesn't look like that!!

Note Folkestone have released forward Remy and defender "Kola" (who I thought looked a decent player) straight after the game. Just shows the margins that many clubs in our league have to operate on.

Couple of quality goals from Elder and Burbridge that should be given more of a mention. Elders header was superb and Burbridge's touch and then composure to finish was first class. Saying that, we didn't play well in the first 45 but had enough about us to rectify the situation in the second. Whelpdale M-O-T-M for me.
