Bruce Sewell Benefit Match

Recommended Posts

Some of the most popular players in Gravesend & Northfleet history will be turning out in support of team mate Bruce Sewell next month.

The Fleet legends, from their Ryman League squad, will face a Tottenham Hotspur veterans side at Stonebridge Road on Sunday November 26th to raise funds for Bruce who has been stricken with motor neurone disease.

The Fleet players will be joined by some of Bruce's team mates from other clubs he played for including Boreham Wood and Yeading.

Among those lending support to the event are Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard who played with Bruce for the Fleet before leaving for West Ham, Peterborough and Wigan.

The match will kick off at 2.p.m. with admission at £6, but schoolchildren will be admitted free.

Fans will be able to meet the players after the game at a function at the Fleet Leisure Centre in Nelson Road, Northfleet. The event will feature a two course buffet reception, auction and raffle, and tickets are priced at £20.

Former Gravesend & Northfleet manager Andy Ford, who is organising the event said: "Bruce is a smashing lad and his story has touched everybody who knows him. Everybody I have contacted wants to help Bruce and his family and we have had a fantastic response. I think fans will be delighted to see the players who played alongside Bruce for the Fleet in the Ryman league and there are sure to be some surprise appearances."

"We are very lucky to have got the Spurs veterans side to come down for the game and I think we can look forward to an entertaining match followed by what looks like being a very well supported evening event."

It is great to see the Club giving this support to an ex-player and I hope a decent crownd turns up for the game, I for one will try and head back to Gravesend that Sunday afternoon. My Dad passed away over 3 years ago now after suffer from Motor Neuron Disease, it is a disease which does not seem to make headlines but at the moment there is no know cure to certain strain of it. You can contract MND and survived for a long tine (like Stephen Hawking), unfortunately my Dad got an aggressive strain. Hope everyone will go along and support Bruce and his family.

oh, woe betide anyone who comments anything not absolutely gushing about a charity event. i think it is a great idea, this match, but think bennett is a poor referee.i didnt realise he was bruce's fav ref, im sure he does not have one. hopefully a lot of money will be generated by this game. a "premiership" ref is not going to draw a bigger crowd, so any opinion of him is not going to affect the match whatsoever
