Todays observer

When i went to buy my observer this morning i was shocked to hear that Mark West will not be bringing in fresh faces as he believes they will not be guaranteed a first team place, surely competition for places brings out the best in players, is mark west saying that players like errol and jarvo are guaranteed a first team place all the time.

Is this the type of manager that we will have, i think west has done wonders for morale in the squad since his takeover but surely he will bring in fresh faces as we will struggle to fill a bench with a fully fit squad.

What do you guys think.

Sounds like a cop out to me.

Any player whether in the squad or an addition

should not be guaranteed a place.

Sounds like he saying that with no money etc that the type of player he can attract would only be good enough for the bench at best.

Does he/anybody do any scouting in the lower leagues/park football?

I bet I know the answer to that.

well it seems that this must be entirely budget related, which is very worrying. we definately need more players not just for competition but to cover the current, and any future, injury problems. if a way is not found to bring in new players then we will be stuck in the relegation fight for the rest of the season without a doubt. most of us saw what happened in the ashford game when we strung together an XI during the injury crisis, it cannot go on like that with only 13 or so fit players.

looks like radders might get his call to the first team after all

I agree reading rebel there are a lot of good players that are playing in the sunday league that could quite easily play for slough, there is no evidence of us looking at any possibilitys like this, the added advantage would be they would come for cheap so there would not be a budget problem surely.

Problem is, a lot of the players who play on Sunday mornings don't have the dedication to play solely on a Saturday, even if they are earning a bit of money for it. I've seen first hand a number of players who would be comfortable at this level of football who prefer the beers to the training.

Another fine example is the lads who've recently left Burnham to go back to Sunday League football.

IMO, it's better to scout the Saturday local leagues as I think you'd find people more willing to switch over.

from where do you get your £3000 p/wk figure

If it is correct what does it cover; players wages; players wages + manager/coach /physio& medical equipment;

all the above + kit/kitman/laundry cost + away travel cost or even hire of W&E f.c. + any other expenses/insurance/fees & fines. The budget could be fairly small or minute depending on what the figure given covers & is the figure true or just speculation.Remember M Deaner makes no financial info public

well im going on the age old £200k plus gate receipts (around £50k) which equals £300k minus the groundshare (£500 a game = 21x500 = £10k, after all, Windsor can't bank on Slough having any home games in the cup). So that leaves £290k which for a 44 week season (that is, if the players get paid during the pre-season) around about £6k a week to pay for all of the above.

Sorry to be stating the bleeding obvious, but I think it's appalling that a club like Slough, with a population of 120,000 plus, of which hundreds if not thousands of men play football at the weekends, can't fill a bench at Ryman Premier level.

It just amazes me that (seemingly) no-one at the club has looked at local level Saturday/Sunday footballers, as others have mentioned, or been in touch with youth teams for 16/17/18 year olds who can provide their best players for Slough to use. I'm sure they'd love the opportunity to represent the town's senior club and have a crack at the Ryman Premier, and wouldn't need to be paid much if at all. Being exiled in Windsor and having no youth or reserve team doesn't help I know, but there's no reason why links can't be forged with local teams IMO.

I know Roy is probably rushed off his feet at the best of times, and Westy and Wilko are still getting used to management, but how much work would it really take to get in contact with local Saturday/Sunday league and youth team players, if only to fill the bench with people who can play football? With the greatest respect to Rav and Westy, they are only very rarely used when there's no better alternative. By the sounds of things, they will both be starting tomorrow. That probably leaves Carl Marsh as a substitute, and that's not good enough in my opinion. I know it must be hard to attract experienced players to Slough Town with the state our club's in, but surely not cheap local talent, of which I'm certain there's plenty.

As things stand, Slough are going into tomorrow's game with seemingly nothing in the way of a bench and half-fit players starting. Does it really have to be that way? Sorry to whinge, I haven't posted all week
