A strong Billericay side made up mostly of first team squad members comfortably saw off a young Burnham side:

2nd sub: Axcell for Semanshia - Axcell LB, Dormer to CB

3rd sub: Lay for Flack - Lay played up front

Goals

9 mins - 1-0 Holland stabbed home from close range after a cross from Semanshia

11 mins - 2-0 A fine goal from Game after a 1-2 with Hill

21 mins - 3-0 Swaine from 6 yds from a Lee-Finch corner

26 mins - 4-0 Howard after good work from Hill and Dormer

Quite an interesting game, especially when you single out one player to watch. The player in question was Matt Game, who worked tirelessly in midfield, picking the ball up from the back four, giving the ball and then moving up the park. On one occassion, he took the ball, laid it off and sprinted 40 yards up the pitch to collect a pass and lay off to one of the forwards. He was also covering back to make some good tackles in defence as well. A remarkable performance by Gameo.

His performance sparked a discussion between those watching in the Cow Shed, that maybe we need a player who can sit in front of the back four in the first team, to collect and lay off and also to provide cover for the defence. Also to make those runs from deep when required. I know JL preferred Jamie Dormer in that position but from what I saw, Matt Game would be my preferred player to do that.

It was also interesting to see the "control" some of the more experienced players displayed in the match. It is unfair to mention the gulf between the two sides, as I am sure it was a shock for Burnham to up against a side with 8 first team players taking part but the way these players "bought" time to play the ball was an eye opener. Certainly the skill that these players have was on display. And to the opposition players credit, they harried, tackled and kept going, only stamina left them down in the last 10 minutes. One does have to keep a certain amount of perspective but all I'm saying is, what I saw, I appreciated the skill on display last night.

A mention must be made to our youth players who blended in well with the first team, which begged the unsaid question, do they train with the first team? They appeared to know each other quite well...

And one last mention to the opposition. I said they put in a lot of effort last night and they did. The score line, although does not in anyway flatter us, the Burnham players certainly didn't stop and their goal was very well taken. A nice chip over the goal keepers head.

Finally, George Lay came on for the last half hour and certainly looked lively. His recovery is certainly on the right road and I would say that he won't be a stranger to the first team squad in the future.

Overall an entertaining evening...and all for £3.

New formation:

Interesting, but, how can this player sit and provide cover for our defence, and be the runner?

In order to have a player sitting in front of the back four, would we not have to drop back and defend deeper, at the moment our game plan is to, and we usually manage to, play a majority of the 90 mins in the oppositions half.

My opinion is that if we had either Jamie or Matt in a sitting role, we would stifle both their defensive and attacking options.

As jl pointed out... Matt Game...He's here, he's there......and for me, that would be a great loss.

Yes, it was nice to see George back in the blue shirt

I suupose I didn't put the arguement over that well...I think what Matt Game did last night was superb, taken into account of the level of football and think that he would certainly be my player to continue to do that in the first team, when possible...One would like to think that we could dominate all opposition in the same way but each game and opposition has to be taken on it's / their own merits...

When we play Bromley and if we progress in the Trophy and play teams higher up the Non League ladder, it would be a consideration...

Perhaps, we should look to a midfield player to take the ball from the midfield at times and distribute, as it certainly set up quite a lot of attacking football...

In Matt Jone's words "You're the manager" and so is everyone when it come to a discussion about football. I best put here, no criticism is or was meant as on Thursady I'm sure to get MJ or Jason grilling me over this... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
