HUGE article on Edgware in the NLP today!

Right here we go then but the beers are on Gavin:

Non-League Edgware Town have made British football history by winning an appeal against a refereeing decision in a victory set to have widesweeping repercussions for the game. The SSML have ordered the Premier Division game between Edgware and visitors Harefield United to be replayed after the London match official Mr Tweed was found to have wrongly disallowed a penalty conversion. Edgware cited a precedent set in a World Cup qualifying game between Bahrain and Uzbekistan as the basis for their appeal following their 1-0 defeat in the game on 5 September and after taking advice from the FA refereeing specialists at Soho Square the league's officials agreed. Officials across the country are now concerned that the floodgates could be opened for Club's to appeal against any refereeing decisions that may be wrong. Already in the wake of the Edgware appeal Birmingham Club Boldmere St Michaels have been ordered to replay their Midland Alliance game in which they beat Friar Lane and Epworth 3-2 last month because the referee made a mistake in identical circumstances.

Commenting on the Edgware verdict an FA spokesman said he had not heard of any other incident whereby an appeal against a refereeing decision in an English game had been successful but said it might have happened at County FA level or in junior soccer circles. Fans are now wondering whether the decision will become a watershed, maybe with video evidence also brought in to overcome the historically accepted human fallibility of match officials. Boldmere boss Mick Bayley said 'it's an unbelievable situation, I always thought the referees decision was final, if we are forced to replay a game because the ref made a mistake it will open up a whole can of worms. It will lead the way to Club's appealing every time they lose a game in which a bad decision is given against them'. With Harefield leading 1-0 through a first half Danny Jordan penalty Edgware were awarded a 64th minute spot kick and Lee Gardner duly converted it. However Mr Tweed disallowed the goal stating that an Edgware player had encroached in the box but instead of ordering Edgware to retake the penalty as per FIFA rules he instead awarded an indirect free kick to Harefield. Unaware of the decision Edgware players were still celebrating the penalty 'equaliser' around a corner flag as Harefield broke clear upfield from the free kick. In desperation Edgware joint boss Steve Newing ran onto the field to stop the game and, joined by his team, loudly and frantically protested to Mr Tweed about his decision, but in vain. Edgware Secretary Paul Gregory said 'even a referees assessor watching the game said that Mr Tweed's decision was correct but we checked the rulebook and found otherwise'. The Club cited FA Law 14 which states that if a team-mate enters the penalty area before the penalty is taken the referee should allow the kick to proceed but, if the ball enters the goal the kick must be retaken. However if the ball does not enter the net then play should restart with a free kick to the defending team. The correct decision should therefore have been a retaken spot kick which, if converted, could have earned Edgware a draw. As a precedent Edgware cited the FIFA decision over a near identical refereeing decision in the Bahrain v Uzbekistan World cup qualifier, that game was ordered to be replayed after the referee was adjudged to have committed a technical error over a penalty retake. Gregory added 'in this case the referee was wrong in the law it was as simple as that'. Newing said ' we are happy with the outcome and feel that it was the only decision that could have been made as the precedent had been set by FIFA'. Edgware's £50 appeal fee was refunded by their league and the game will be replayed.

Actually it was the first time I had read the article properly and having taken it all in it could really set a precedent throughout World football bringing huge publicity to the SSML albeit perhaps not the sort of publicity we want, Edgware Town could also become a World famous Club in a 'Bosman' perspective.

...
Thanks very much for typing that up Rhodes. As for the world famous as in 'bosman' I remember reading at the time how an unknown belgium footballer would become world famous.

Maybe if any games were replayed due to referee not following the letter of the law it could be called 'doing an Edgware <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />'
