EDGWARE TOWN V HAREFIELD UNITED

Recommended Posts

I have read with some interest the many posts that have appeared on this and many other forums over the past week since the league ordered the game between Edgware Town and Harefield United to be replayed.

Most of these posts have missed the fundamental issue in this case. All the examples quoted on these sites, of referee decisions which are claimed could merit a replay, really are decisions made by referees within the laws and rules of the game. For example:

Was the ball across the line before the keeper saved it, over the line a goal - on the line, not a goal, the referee decides. A ball deflected behind, is it a corner or a goal kick the referee decides. Was it a foul, a yellow or even a red card, the referee decides. Was the foul inside the area, a penalty or outside the area a free kick the referee decides.

All these examples allow the referee to affect the outcome of a game, but they are all legitimate decisions encompassed by the laws and rules of football. However, if a penalty is scored and disallowed for encroachment, incidentally both the penalty award and the encroachment are decisions the referee makes, the kick should be retaken, that is the rule, the referee in the Edgware v Harefield game broke the rules. The game has to be replayed.

As for the claims that this would set a dangerous precedent remember that this is the THIRD time that this has happened. One of the games that was ordered to be replayed was a decision by FIFA. I rest my case.

I thought that the game was controlled by LAWS not rules

According to this weeks Harrow observer, the replay may not be certain afeter all.

This taken from the paper

"Edgware have only heard verbally from the league that their appeal has been upheld. Harefield have heard NOTHIHNG, but IF the decsion is confirmed they intend to appeal"

So after all that it appears that there could still be some doubt over whether it will be replayed or not.

Nothing to do with the FA yet Malds.

Why Kroons?
Who has made the decision to replay the game then?

Just to throw another spanner in the works what happens if this stops someone like Hertford winning the league will they appeal aswell?

The SSML. It will end up at the FA at some point though.

I'm sure Gavin mentioned that someone from the FA was present when the decision was made.

Quite possibly but it was a league decision not an FA one.

Good point Malders, Im sure that would happen, and who could blame Hertford if they did, really is a mockery.

You might not be able to express a comment on this Kroons but has it been discussed at any of the Officials get togethers... do you think this is putting a bit too much pressure on officials for which essentially isn't much more than a hobby for most?

PS Did the referee in charge get demoted for a few weeks to do Kentish Town games?

Very amusing, a League decision has been made to replay the game so it should just be sensibly accepted by all concerned.

Personally it could end up being more of an advantage to Hertford if the replay is a drawn game with the possibility of multiple suspensions incurred resulting from the atmosphere Gavin says has built up...

I still think the decision stinks though.. if the decision has actually been made at all!!
