Now that's what I call writing no.1

Recommended Posts

It was a pulsating second half, Rob, and I don't see 'pulsating' in there.

Still. Nice slant to the story. It beats the old stats and facts stuff favoured by that hack what writes for the St Albans Observer. And I notice that my good friend Midweeksaint is catching the bug. From his piece in the matchday programme on Saturday, I saw that we have never won a home league fixture on any October 14th - we've only secured one point in the 98 history of the club in a 1-1 draw against Yeovil in 1926 or something. Now that is a quality stat! And Mws. I noticed the " - " around every "we" in your piece. I thought of some of the comments on here! Someone once said that you have to have thick skin to come on here - Me? I bruise too easily. You have the right to refer to 'we' rather than "we" when you get out of the Cola Stand, mate!

Has Ricky George ever played the game, I wonder?

Yes, it was an example of literary irony, actually, Rob.

I suspect that Gibbo doesn't know who he is. Picture the scene in the boardroom when visiting journos are entertained with the prawn sandwiches. "It's good to see you gentlemen of the fourth estate at the Fortress today. Champion. Pulsating. And it's the FA Cup draw on Monday. I have two special memories of the Road to Wembley. Two year ago , we should have had my team, Newcastle, here at Clarence Park were it not for that mischief-making ex Chairman of Hornchurch and the Essex mafia. But worse even than that is the very first match that I saw at [wherever Newcastle play]. I was sat on me Da's shoulder and some long-haired namby-pamby Southerner scored a lucky, flukey goal that sent the Toon army out of the cup in 1972. I'll never forget that moment. Now, what did you say your name is?"

"Simon Barnes".

Hi AFF

Bit busy today so only just seen your post. Stats are a great way of filling space when you're struggling to find enough words to fill a page! I was really disappointed to find there are no home games which coincide with dates when various club records were set. Here's hoping for next year (if I'm stil writing then). As for the (single) quote marks, just trying to convey the point that whilst I am a City fan I don't totally belong (notice the small c on convey, if it was a capial that would make it Reading's #17!).

Cheers
