Wat a Draw??

Recommended Posts

This is the PB match report.. bit awkward to link directly to it due to the way their site is setup.

The game began with the home side attacking and pressurising the Potters Bar defence but without creating any clear opportunities. In fact, the closest that anyone came to scoring in the opening 20 minutes was a freak effort from The Scholars' Andy Keepence whose free kick from the half way line bounced over home 'keeper Scott Chalmers-Stevens and clipped the crossbar on its way over.

Potters Bar were a different side from this moment onwards and took the lead in the 21st minute. Keepence played a through ball to Gabriel Fanibuyan and the speedy frontman cut inside his marker into a central position from where he drilled a 25 yard shot low into the corner of the Margate net.

Margate, reputed to have the second highest wage bill in the entire Ryman League, responded with their first shot on target, but James Pinnock's 24th minute effort on the turn lacked the power to make things difficult for Richard Hayward.

Just after the half hour, Hayward turned away a Lee Protheroe free kick for a corner but, as the flag kick was delivered into a crowded area, Hayward took a bang to the head and there was a lengthy delay whilst physio Carly Wells removed Hayward's tooth from his lip.

The delay didn't upset the rythym of the game which now saw Potters Bar playing a more confident passing game than had been allowed in the opening quarter of an hour.

Two minutes before the break, Dean Harding pressurised a Margate defender into an underhit back pass which Phil Turner raced in to intercept. Chalmers-Stevens rushed from goal and tripped Turner with an outstretched arm to concede a penalty kick. Captain Ryan Harris drilled a low spot kick beyond the home 'keeper to give The Scholars a two goal interval lead.

During the break, Margate's Club Doctor assessed Hayward's injury and gave him the all clear to carry on playing as the stitches required could wait until after the match.

Five minutes into the second half, Jay Saunders should have brought the home side back into the game but his free header from a corner was powerfully headed well wide of the goal.

A couple of minutes later at the other end, The Scholars could have wrapped the game up. Daniel Talbot's free kick from near the corner flag found the head of Harris but the ball thumped off the crossbar. The rebound fell to Richard Howard who headed the ball back towards goal but a defender was able to head clear.

Margate came straight back but Protheroe should have done better than volley well over the crossbar from the corner of the six yard box.

A disappointment on the day was a harsh caution for Harris in the 63rd minute for allegedly delaying the restart of play after Margate had been awarded a corner. The sweeper's fifth caution of the season means he will miss the fourth qualifying round tie. The corner itself was headed goalwards by Danny Hockton but Kieron Woodward was on hand to clear off the line.

As the game moved into its closing stages, the visitors retained composure and the home side never really looked like getting back into the game. Potters Bar were happy to carry on attacking whenever possible and a third goal never looked out of the question. In the 81st minute, a superb crossfield pass from Harding found fellow wide man Woodward in acres of space on the left and his 20 yard drive just failed to curl sufficiently and whistled wide of Chalmers-Stevens far post.

Four minutes from time, Margate's player/manager Robin Trott sold his goalkeeper short with a cushioned back header and Turner pounced on to the loose ball. As the forward tried to clip the ball over the onrushing Chalmers-Stevens, the home custodian handled outside his area and, as the last line of defence, was promptly sent off. Substitute 'keeper Charlie Mitten took over but wasn't tested by Talbot's free kick which failed to dip as hoped and sailed over the crossbar.

With a minute of stoppage time played, Hayward missed a high cross for the first time all afternoon, failing to get any power into his attempted punch clear. The ball fell to Hockton who drove the ball into the net via a slight deflection.

An unsavoury incident then followed. Harris got caught in the net following his attempts to prevent the goal going in and, as he lay in the back of the net, the bouncing ball landed in his arms. Margate's Steve McKimm, mistakenly believing that Harris was deliberately wasting time, chose to violently assault Harris as the player lay in the net with nowhere to go and was promptly sent off for his troubles to bring the home side down to nine men.

In truth, the number of home players on the pitch at the end of the game was not a surprise given the over-physical approach of their team all afternoon. The back three of Keepence, Sam Ledger and Harris are all experienced players at the higher level and stood up firmly to the strongarm tactics deployed on the day. Perhaps more concentration on playing football and less worrying about getting the elbow in first may have brought the home side a better result, but who knows for sure?

One final heartstopping moment for the visitors was a Pinnock long range drive in the fifth minute of stoppage time that only just whistled wide of Hayward's post, although the goalkeeper may well have had the shot covered had it been on target.

The final whistle sounded shortly afterwards and the travelling contingent celebrated being only 90 minutes away from the first round proper after a professional, competent and thoroughly deserved performance.

Team: Richard Hayward, Andy Keepence, Sam Ledger, Ryan Harris, Kieron Woodward, Daniel Talbot, Gabriel Fanibuyan (Danny Charge 76), Nicky Winger, Richard Howard, Phil Turner, Dean Harding.

Unused subs: Josh Cooper, James Dickie, Michael Sharman, Andy Martin

best thing was that it was only 2-0 at half time and we had a few chances as well....so their manager brought on their top striker at half time who then scored a hat-trick in 10 minutes and then got taken off !....canvey got to the fourth round proper that season

Must say the draw is quietly pleasing.
Potters Bar Town - I'm afraid that I'm going to rain on your parade as I am at a loss as to why you and others on here feel that it is a good draw for you, you could have got a far easier one either at Parkfield or away which would have given you a great chance to get through and Woking away won't be that lucrative either. If you had to draw a Conference Club then Oxford away would have been the pick but I just feel that Woking is a bit of a damp squib considering what might have been.

Out of all the teams they could have been drawn against, Woking have the 10th highest average attendance, so it's not a bad draw money wise.

My other team have been drawn at home to a step 5 club, so they stand a very good chance of progressing to the next round. Hopefully I will be there to see them do it.
