serious question

Yeah refs enjoy a bit of banter if they understand it as such. But a 15year old lad would probably feel quite intimidated. I love a bit of banter personally but then I am an adult and know how to react if it gets a bit close to the bone.

And anyway my daddy is a proper nutter and will beat you and your daddies up

All my parents are told that they must not question the ref and that if they do then they will not be welcome at the games.

Wrong!

I am at times both or all three ref, coach and parent.

I believe it is my right/duty to question a referee if I believe he has got something wrong!!

Always polite and always with respect, but if a referee is out there making decisions, he is a participant in the game.

It is important that we at times exchange opinions with all participants, I also inform the referee when he has made a very good decision as is my right/duty!!

Do not distance referees from the game!!

Mind you I witnessed a situation in Grays when my son first qualified a fight broke out on the pitch and one of the adults was aggressive to my son, I was the model of restraint, I did however point out if he did it again, he would require a straw to eat his next meal!!

We must protect referees but they enjoy a bit of banter as well!!

I agree with what you say but shouting at the touchline is no way to do it. A friendly discussion after the match is the way to do it.

Quite right. I enjoy the banter as long as it is banter.

I had a 14 year old ref one of my under 8 games at the weekend. During the first half he was subject to a stream of criticism from our opponents parents. I asked their coach to ask them to be quiet which he did and they were better in the 2nd half. At the end of the game one of the parents appraoched the ref and started telling him where he had gone wrong. I went over and asked the parent if he wouldn't mind leaving him alone at which he point he got aggressive towards me. The young lad was virtually in tears.

Now hopefully he will ref my teams games again but it is a huge set back in persuading him to take referring further.
