Certainly the Grays fans around me when I saw the Exeter game the other day didn't rate Frank Gray at all. His tactics at times did seem rather baffling.

I'm not surprised. He was on something very similar at Canvey. If I won the lottery, I'd pay that man's wages for him to come back to us.

When Adam Miller went to Grays their fans reckoned he was absolute crap, he ended up playing first team at QPR, the same Grays fans reckon Boylan is complete crap, well thats not the Boyly we know who scored shed loads of goals and from what I saw over the years always gave 100%,but Grays is a players graveyard. And as for fans, in the Ryman they got 200 thru the gates tops. Now they have lost a few on the spin, top ten Conf they get 900 last weekend, Canvey A La King over again ?? We wonder !!

The only clubs that can really compete on attendances in non-league football are northern clubs. There's a hell of a lot more passion north of Birmingham.

But we all know Ribbit that the majority of so-called fans will flock to see a wining side, scoring loads of goals. How many people from those halcyon come and support Canvey home and away now in the lower rung ? But hey, we are having good fun now, a nice relaxed club watching a new squad taking shape and knowing that the future is good.

Yeah, of course a winning club will gain fans - Christ, it's how I came to be a fan. It's no coincidence that I started supporting at the beginning of the season we won the Ryman Premier. I'd been to the Lane before, but only for the big cup games.

 

People that do stick around even through the thin times are a rare find down here. I just have this view that in the north there is a community feel to their small towns (no matter what anyone says, I will never accept that Canvey has any sort of community away from the odd street), where they sit in the pub on a Sunday afternoon, not talking about Chelsea or Real Madrid, but how Burscough or Vauxhall Motors are doing after actually bothering to go and support their local side lose 4-0 at home to a team three leagues below them.

Quite right pal, I do quite a lot of ground-hopping, my missus is a Northerner, so I have got to a good few Unibond and Northern league grounds. The lifeblood of those clubs is the clubhouses which are open all day 7 days a week, the football is a talking point but a sideline, at a club like Canvey its different,its getting people thru the gate. Up north football clubs are an extension of working mens clubs and the revenue that goes with it.

Mate dont, the guy has the same team as last season and al that was needed was a little change hear and there, instead the guy has come in a ruined a good attacking side.

Just to give you a view on the above again from a Grays perspective

When Adam Miller joined Grays we were a strugling Ryman league side, now you know hand on heart that Adam Miller is not the man up for a battle or a fight. We were in a relegation dog fight that year and he just didnt have the fight. He then joined a very successful Aldershot side who played around him and he was a success.

Boylan has been the result of negative tactics, fans dont think he is crap, his record speaks for its self.

Grays being a players graveyard, not strictly true we have turned rejected players such as Mclean (aldershot fans laughed when we signed him) Oli, Slabber, Poole, Kightly, Eastwood, Hooper, Sangere etc into decent players who have used Grays as a platform to kick on in their careers.

As for the crowds well you can not tell me we are the only exception to the increase in crowds after success, we are not and we wont be the last.

I have no doubts that we are a small club punching above our weight, and the possibility of us being another Canvey are high.

I remember with that Exeter game he was playing Kightley on the wrong flank and it just wasn't working. He brought Glenn Poole on and switched Kightley to the other wing and the change around was dramatic.

 

Dennis Oli seems a shadow of the player he once was and why is John Martin not in the first XI?

Well some of these I can not answer as the managers mind is a weird one.

Dennis Oli now there is a hero to villian, with Dennis he's agent is a major factor in the lads career, he had a new contract when he signed to a new agent, the first thing the agent wanted to do was agree a new contract between Dennis and the club even though the ink on he's current contract had only just dried.

He has turned into the ego who does not want to train full time and has illusions of football at a higher level, yet his performances for Grays have been lackluster.

Johnny Martin is a hero but has found it tough in the conference all in all, baring a handfull of good performanaces. being a little light weight is he's main problem. For me though he is a hero and a really nice honnest bloke.

ribbit, re you comment about more passion north of birmingham i tend to disagree. is it not a factor down here that there is more competition for the fans i.e. canvey/grays/hornchurch all well supported clubs in local vicinity not to mention dagenham. then of course you have dozens of london clubs that play professional football and are easier to get to. is the south not more predominatly wealthier then the north hence people can afford premiership prices.

Johnny Martin is a hero but has found it tough in the conference all in all, baring a handfull of good performanaces. being a little light weight is he's main problem. For me though he is a hero and a really nice honnest bloke.

Saw Martin a couple of times for Hornchurch and I always rated him. Would have loved to see him down at the Lane. Very hard working player and weighs in with a few goals.

Yeah, the south is more affluent of course and yeah, there are far more teams around here than, say, around Halifax. However, I've found that in northern towns football clubs are part of the community, not pushed to it's boundaries and generally shat on by the people and the councils. Like the poster above me said, football clubs can be an extension of the old working man's clubs and clubs like Accy (I know they're not non-league anymore, f'n big time Charlies) and Alty personify that.

Also, I have a probably slightly outdated view, that teams in these places are better supported because there's bugger all else to do up there. Which, in parts, is true. Obviously Canvey is a bore in itself, so that doesn't correlate, but I'll ignore that. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Smallsy, appreciate what you're saying, there are far more clubs down sarf, but there are also far more people to be spread among those clubs. I agree with Ribbits comment of the social element being the nucleus of the midlands / northern clubs, especially the smaller outfits - we just dont possess that mindset south of watford. Our trips to grantham, halesowen, stafford rangers, etc etc all of these not so consistently fortunate on-field, but off field have fantastic social facilities, which self-fulfill the future of the club.

 

Personally, I love the bar at Canvey, but on match day, I can think of better places to take my wife and daughter as its a smokey dark hole (as per many other southern clubs facilities - those outside of a running track dont count).

 

BTW, Does anyone out there know what happened to the monies generated from the original 'buy a brick for the new clubhouse'fund ? I assume it was used for ground improvements. But applying Ribbits logic re social fabric of a footy club, will it ever, or is there a need for it to be reinstated ?
