Edgware were 0-1 down at home to rivals Harefield Utd. We were awarded a penalty kick, which we scored from. However, the ref, said there had been encroachement and instead of ordering a retake as in law 14 of the FA rules. He gave HUFC an indirect free kick. We ended up losing 0-1

There really is a problem with a shortage of referees. This leads to anyone who shows a little bit of potential being pulled up the pyramid as quickly as possible, often before they are ready to progress. At the same time, the lower levels have either brand new officials with little experience, or those without the ability to progress higher.

Prime example earlier this season in a Vase game. Romford were attacking and were awarded a throw. This was taken quickly at which point the lino raised his flag and gave offside. a free kick was awarded and the attack broke down. Even a school kid knows that you can not be offside direct from a throw-in.

I tried to discuss this with the ref after the game. His first response was to say that he had to back his linesman's decision. His next response was "why does it matter? You won the game". He then moved on to "I can't discuss decisions after a game".

I could understand if I had raised my voice or appeared angry, but this was not the case. In truth he knew that both he and the linesman had got it wrong. Fortunately we won the game, the prize money is in the account and there will be no appeal to the FA in this case.

A very interesting point there, Johnny.

If you like a bit of entertainment, ask all the referee's you meet to give you THEIR interpretation of the new off-side rule.

You'd be surprised how much the term, 'interferring with play' can vary !
