HELP SAVE PHYSICS AT READING UNIVERSITY

Recommended Posts

Hello.

The physics department at Reading University is under serious threat of closure in the Universities latest round of cutbacks, with closure threatened as soon as 2010. Those who currently study at the department appreciate how valuable the department and its research and teaching are to the community, the country, and to the future of the world.

We do not want to see this department close, we do not wish to be the last to benefit from the amazing facilities at Reading Physics, a centre of excellence in many areas of the subject, and with top links to other departments, and other universities.

Please help us by signing the petition on the following link, it has been set up by the Reading University Students Union and the Reading University Physics Society: http://www.petitiononline.com/RUPhys/

I hope that you will help us, whether you like physics or not, we need as many names as we can get, there is no need to comment, all we need is your name!

Many thanks

Dan, I read about the closure of the department in the press the other day and though I can sympathise with those who have an affinity for the place, simple economics dictate it is no longer a viable option. Before the increase in tuition fees Physics departments up and down the country were struggling to attract enough students to make their courses worthwhile. With fees going up to £3K a year there simply won't be enough people looking to do the courses and inevitably that means closure.

The real money now is in Business related degrees and Psychology. Traditional disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry and Maths are in serious danger up and down the country. Whilst I admire your peeps for coming up with petition I can assure you it will mean absolutely nothing.

the key detail marcus is that they are not closing it til 2010, meaning that if the plans go through there will be no intake after this year. hopefully no degrees will be disrupted, however we still do not want to see it close.
