What would you do ????

Recommended Posts

On Saturday I took our reserves down to St Magaretsbury. With players pulling out left right and centre I had to field a team of players i had never seen before, the easy option would have been to cancel but with the Preperation and everything that the hosts arrange we decided to get the game out of the way knowing that we were on a hiding to nothing. However what happened at half-time beggared belief. The Referee who name I am unaware of pulled our captain to one side and advised him to speak to the team and advise them as we were getting stuffed to go home now and cut our losses as we were not a good team and it woudl make everyones life easier to pack in now rather than play the second half., We were 5.0 down and playing very badly but what sort of message is that sending out to the players. I did not get told this until we were on our way home after the game finishing 9.0. but had I been told this at half-time what would I have done ??? Mmmm to be honest i am not sure. Yes we could not field a team that could compete with the well drilled St Margaretsbury team but at least we turned up and showed willing which is more than could be said for the 25 players we had signed on who deemed themselves unavailable. We went home really down but safe in the knowledge we had turned up and tried. Has anyone else come across anything like this and what would your reaction be like ???? What would have happened if we took the referees advice ????? I would appreciate people Views

Interesting! Ref seems a bit of a plonker - firstly for saying anything like that in the first place - must have really improved the spirits!, and secondly you would have got in trouble with the league had you given up at half time.

Maybe something should be mentioned on the referee report form?

As the St Mags reserve team manager I would just like to add that despite New Bradwell losing 9-0 they never gave up and continued to play the right way without becoming frustrated and I take my hat off to you and your players. As for the ref, the less said the better on my part. All I will add is that if that is what he said it is outrageous. He was italian and his english was not great and a little wet behind the ears shall we say. Lets hope he learns to not make comments like that in future regardless of how the game is going. Paul

I would suggest you make mention of it in a report on the match referee and send a separate e-mail to Eric Harrison informing him of what happened and that you will be mentioning it in your written report. Eric can give you the referee's name if you need it.

We had something similar with our U18's about three years ago. Wingate & Finchley switched the match from the Wednesday to the Tuesday as laste as the previous Sunday. This resulted in the game clashing with Bonfire night and Arsenal's Champions League game. As many of the boys already had tickets to either go to Highbury or a fireworks display, we had quite a few call-offs and ended up travelling to Wingate with only 9 players. The referee then sent one off 10 minutes into the game and we were left with 8. We went on to lose 15-0! At one point in the second half, a defender was injured clearing the ball for a corner and, even though we were about 12-0 down at the time, the referee wouldn't let him back on until the corner was taken and we had to defend it with only 7 players on the pitch.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Wingate & Finchley then wrote to the League complaining that it was originally only meant as a competition for youth teams of Ryman & Southern League clubs and that SSML clubs (which we were at the time) were not of sufficient strength and shouldn't be allowed in!

Surely clubs should be given credit for making the effort. It is all too easy to cry off in such circumstances. Full credit to New Bradwell for giving it a go.

Can I just add. Although from an early in the game it was obvious that there would only be one outcome to the result the St Magaretsbury players did not try and showboat or take the P##s out of My players and went about the whole game in a Professional matter. They were a credit to the club.

First of all congrats to you and the rest of the New Bradwell team for sticking it out, it can't be easy. I remember a couple of years ago our ressies played AFC Wallingford in the Suburban League. Wallingford turned up with eleven players plus the 52 year old kit man who went in goal first half. We won 10-1 (it was 7-0 at half time and if the guy who took over in between the sticks had been in goal the whole game it might have been a lot less) but they kept trying to play football in the right way maybe too much but they celebrated their goal like they had won and they like you guys deserve praise for fufilling the fixture.

As for the ref, I think someone needs a word with him to keep his views to himself and a comment on the report is probably the best thing for you to do.
