The Great Clement Temile

Recommended Posts

I am a new fan here, intrigued by the news that Temile is involved with the team.

I think the story falls between the extremese. Temile definitely featured in our Nigerian national youth and senior teams in the 1980's and to anyone who was growing up in that time he is indeed a legend and a guy we remember fondly like anyone reveres the football heroes of their childhood. The "Paul Scholes" analogy I find interesting but I dont think Scholes could ever dribble, speed or of play the wing like Temile. That said, while Temile was a decent scorer from deep, he wasnt any where near as clinical as Scholes.

That period of the mid-late 1980's by the way, was part of a golden era in our domestic league. Our coaches and players were reaching heights not acheived before and the league was developing a tremendous amount of depth and competitiveness. And yet the players hadn't yet started going abroad en masse. So we were spoiled for great football - competitive and entertaining stuff week in week out.

Temile did not reach the club heights of say a Finidi or Kanu, who have won the European Cup with Ajax, but he was a key part of teams that were competing for African club honors at a time when most of the best African players were there in Africa still - not in the European champions league. He was coached by some of the finsest coaches we have had and he played along side guys like Stephen Keshi, former Anderlecht and Nigerian captain who led the team in 1994 world cup. Had Africa more than one spot in the world cup back them, I have no doubt Temile would have been in the World cup in his time too.

Nonetheless that was two decades ago and he seems to have moved on to a different phase of life - bringing his on the field knowledge and experience to coaching. So I'm certainly looking forward to it - and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Welcome Mr Kanu, I first thought that you might actually be the Great former Arsenal Kanu. I really enjoyed your post and it is so refreshing to have someone who knows of the great man and who respects his huge achievements for the Super Eagles throughout the 1980s. You even suggest that he was a better player than Paul Scoles could ever be in terms of dribbling, speed and wing play, I gather Clement made the likes of Jessie Owens, Carl Lewis and Ben Johnson look tortoise like and that was with a football at his feet, indeed when he joins in our training sessions he still has everything and I'm sure could still play at a very high level. Thanks very much Mr Kanu for taking the trouble to come on here to confirm that Clement was indeed a 'football God', if you PM me your address I will happily send you a signed photograph of Clement and some souveniers of our up and coming Club Kentish Town who you will be hearing a lot more of in the future particually if we can persuade Clement to stay with us for another year or more.

Rhodes, you missed a bit off that article - please add after "..Clement Temile and Etim Esin?"

"These were footballers who could have won global fame with their talents but were shot down by bad conduct."

But then you know that, don't you?

Awesome Horace! I had just found that and came back to post it and you beat me too it!!!!

"Who can still remember the stories of Nigerian soccer prodigies like Tarila Okorowanta, Clement Temile and Etim Esin? These were footballers who could have won global fame with their talents but were shot down by bad conduct. Young footballers need to live (and play) by example like Scholes. As United fans are fond of singing when he scores, “Paul Scholes, he scores goals, Paul Scholes he scores goals”, they too can score goals if they show more of the Scholes dedication to the beautiful game of football."

I didn't even get past the first sentence and couldn't carry on for laughing so much! I'll have a good look through it when I get a chance. I haven't even bothered reading the long rambling post about Paul Scholes yet.

No need to bother PBT, it is just another example of Rhodes shooting himself in the foot. The article is a nice piece about Scholes' long and excellent career, it only mentions Clement Temile right at the end as a bad example of a player who ruined his own career. Although of course Rhodes strangely edited the negative slant out (can't think why).

Spidermanor - I didn't edit anything out and can only think that the piece was too long for a post on here and some of it automatically got cut out. Once again I can't understand why you and others don't give credit where credit is due, Kanu's post rubber stamps, in no uncertain terms, that Clement is the real deal he was one of Africa's greatest ever players, he even suggests that Scholes isn't good enough to lace Clement's boots in a number of departments such as dribbling, speed and wing play.

Rhodes - to date, the post by Kanu is the only one he has made. Therefore, it is not likely to be something the rest of us are likely to take seriously as he has not yet become an established member of the board and it smacks of either somebody put up to the task by you or, as already suggested, you posting under a pseudonym.

As for Temile, I am surprised someone with a record of bad conduct in his native Nigeria would even be considered as a role model for a team consisting of council estate youngsters who are only being kept on the straight and narrow by their telepathic football skills! Not sure why you would even consider the man for the job, let alone go on bended knee all the way to Lilleshall for him.

And you normally only get pre season friendlies from neighbouring big clubs and this were to happen what benefit would this do a club with a manager that has done everything in the game and a team wanting to get into the premiership it would be a waste of time and I couldnt see this happening. Could play the youth side possibly :-)

Surprised you managed to get straight into the side, then. According to the gospel of Rhodes, you have to be one of the group from the Camden Estate to get in. Apparently, they wouldn't leave Kentish Town even if Arsenal or Tottenham wanted them!
