Cambridge Match

Recommended Posts

It's been said many times on many threads - and here it is again !

Grounds don't win football matches

Grounds are not prime time viewing

Football teams win matches

With a bit of help from a crowd

If a crowd don't turn up , like at San Stonebridge , the match doesn't get cancelled due to lack of interest . If the away supporters don't like their facilities at our ground , will they stop supporting their team , or never come to San Stonebridge again ? No . They have a burger van and a toilet facility , same as us . They are welcome in our bar , same as us . They can choose to spend dosh in our club shop , same as us . I too would love a new ground , with terrific facilities for all - we have been told it is coming - TRUST THEM . We watched Maidstone , Dartford and Sittingbourne get too big too quick , get grand ideas and disappear - in the Darts case not all their own fault . This club has gone STEADILY forward every year for a long time now - I wouldn't like to feel what the other Kent clubs fans felt like , would you ? Stay positive , it is what it is - bring a friend , bring your kids , or borrow someone else's - it's the best thing to do , and most of us know it . SOW SEEDS , DON'T CARRY AN AXE !

gnfc superb said:Slatter looked back to his best

Really? He struggled in the first half, with a lot of misplaced passes. That said, his mainly excellent set-pieces in the second half, and the shot that Crichton superbly tipped over, meant he did improve as the game went on.

Credit must go to Sodje for the taking his goal so well, after his missed opportunities in previous matches (e.g. Exeter at the end, Weymouth). His pace clearly scared the Cambridge defence.

A comfortable win in the end, with Cambridge probably the worst side we've played this season aside from Tamworth.

Oh, and DarrenGNFC: an excellent post regarding the crowd situation. Let's hope your hypotheses are correct. If the 300 or so home supporters who went to the Dagenham game but stayed away today were all doing so because of the England match, then they are morons.

I think you had it just about right. Slatts has struggled this year but it was obvious that he prefers playing down the centre rather than the wing where he gets a little lost, I think that to see the best in him he needs to be busy and the centre is probably the best for him. Unfortunately he is competing with Mark DeBolla, so its not going to happen all the time MDB is fit.

He did get better as the game went on, no doubt about it.

Onome is a strong player with pace. All the time he does not have to think in front of goal, he scores, but again at 18/19 he will only get better. I would like to see him start more games rather than come on late for 20 minutes.

I didnt think it was a bad game, Cambridge, 1 defeat in 5 and 3 wins, were not great, we were better no doubt. They beat Stevenage who are now on a roll. Are we not underestimating ourselves?

What planet do the Morons come from? Didn't Doctor Who encounter them once? Or was it Luke Skywalker, Captain Kirk, Blakes 7, I cant remember.

And there I was thinking that suporting a more successful/ambitious side called West Ham Utd instead of the Fleet played a large role in your giving Stonebridge Road the elbow ( see earlier posts, passim). I hope that you do come to the Stafford game as you said you might to see what you have been missing. But then you were definitely coming to the Burton game last season weren't you? Personally I think we may not see you until the 11th December. Why then? Well CAFC reserves play WHUFC reserves of course! Up The Fleet!

Quality response.

So far this season has clashed with holiday, work & family issues that have lead to a funeral.

For the record, I haven't been to Upton Park either.

11th December to watch the stiffs? No chance.

I was just highlighting that calling those on 'the missing list' morons isn't exactly the way to entice them back.

I'm sure the Fleet Trust Secretary would agree.

I don't approve of general abuse either. And certainly you are not someone beginning with the 'M' word. However you did have a dig at the Fleet in preference to the Hammers last season, so I thought what I posted was, in the circumstances, justified.

People who stay away are in the main ill informed or ( favourite term for the average Gravesend citizen ) apathetic.

I wasn't calling all those missing fans morons, I was calling those that were missing because of the England game morons.

You already said that you missed both our match and the England game due to work, so why reply, guilt?

So then we've sorted it all out. You took my comments out of context, that's your fault, so where’s my apology?

Why do people need to eat at the ground ? and, if they need to, why would that put them off attending ?
:

For exactly the same reason people eat in theatres, cinemas etc.

But the realty is they do therefore provision has to be made for food and drink to be available. Plus if run correctly it can also be a source for additional funds, supplementing monies raised through admission charges, programmes etc.

Why do people eat in Theatres/Cinemas then ? Still can't see it !

I can understand if you went for a meal in a restaurant before or after the theatre, but not in the actual theatre itself, hence my comment.

I can't imagine people saying that they must go to watch GNFC because the food is so good ? Yes, provide basics for those that maybe starving, having not been able to grab anything to eat on their travels, but is there a need for a gourmet chef ? STOP COOKING !!

Cheers,

Regarding the 'morons' debate, with positions of responsibilities, and any position associated with the club fulfills that criteria, comes responsibility.

Blindly calling any England fans who choose not to support Fleet over the national side was a bit crass, especially as it those specific fans the rest of us are trying to recruit.

Perhaps our Trust secretary needs a PR secretary.

Unless I am missing something obvious ( in which case no doubt someone will point it out !!), what was the contention between the 'Fleet & England games ? I saw both...ok I missed the first five minutes of the England game by the time I got back to the pub, but I didn't have an issue with that. In fact , with hindsight, I might have well wished that I had missed more of the England game.

Cheers,

Hirsty has this right - surely this is the case at pretty much all Conference grounds, Kiddy's haute cuisine excepted?

oh come on, you're only there for 2hours max! Bring your own food if you cant stand to wait that long! What sorta food you all expecting eh?

People dont come to a football match to eat. Yes, it would bring in funds, but then so would selling anything!

I have something to eat before I leave home & then have something else to eat when I return home ! As long as the bar is open then that's the main thing !! Or are you expecting GNFC Stonebridge Road to feature in Kent's Good Food Guide ?
A personal opinion, so no point in having a go at me.

Cheers,

No,no food guide , but after hours on a coach, traveling`to support your local club, dont you think that should at least have the right to be able to purchase a drink, or even a cup of milky fleet tea without having to hunt the ground out for it ? or should they use one of the many cafes and bistros that surround the ground?

I'm not sure what your point is here. If the match is segregated then there is catering facilities at the away end, if it isn't then the stewards will direct the away fans behind the stand to the snack bar and the proper bar. No hunting involved at all.
