Just looked in on the history site

They were effectively the 6th Dragoon Guards but where I've listed them as the Carabiniers on the site that's how they were referred to in match reports, league tables etc at the time. In other seasons they were always just called 6th Dragoon Guards. They were based in Canterbury.

Think it's fair to say that standards weren't very high pre WWI - Margate even had a defender who wore glasses for a while !

Nothing against glasses-wearers, I should probably wear them myself, but the fact that Margate had a player who played in them suggested to me that maybe things were a bit shoddy in the early days. Don't remember too many top class players in football history who took to the field in specs. Edgar Davids springs to mind but that's not quite the same.

Jose - if the Margate player called Dow did turn out to be a relative of yours then it'd be interesting to know.

Eric Worthington wore contact lenses when playing for Margate in the 1950's, I think Nobby Stiles wore them playing for England and Beckenham Reserves had a guy wearing glasses playing for them in the early 1950's.

Spectacular!

When Great Britain had the misfortune to join the EEC (as was) in 1973 there was a special match played between players of the then new countries (cant think off hand who the other 2 countries that sold their souls that year were)against players from the existing 6 countries.

I know there was a Dutch player playing in glasses that night.
