The NLP have found us, we are on the map.

Page 8 Sunday October 1st. Good Interview.

If you have not read, allow me to quote

"GAFFER LIAM'S GOT OUR FLEET SAILING"

"Its been a great start to the season for the club - and for me. If you had asked some of our critics at the start of the season who they were tipping for relegation the Fleet might have been one of their favourites.

The gaffer Liam Daish's budget wasn't the biggest anyway - and it was cut in the summer, so it was difficult for him, but he's used his contacts to bring in some quality players. We're not one of the big boys in the Conference, but we're here to compete - and we've cetainly done that so far. We've already beaten Grays and held our own against the bigger clubs like York and Aldershot."

(You can now add Halifax, Rushden, Exeter and Dagenham to that list Charlie!)

"One of the major factors in that has been the spirit that we've created. We've not got a very big squad and that has helped us out - the lads are together and thats helped us through in some games. We're a fit bunch, touchwood, thanks to the move to full time, and thats really helped us on and off the pitch. There were a lot of new lads arriving in the summer, but training as a full time club rather than a part time club has made sure we've gelled quickly as a unit. The Gaffer let more than 10 players go at the end of the last season and I was worried we wouldn't be able to attract the necessary quality to replace them, but we have."

(Great work Liam!)

"There's a lot of money being splashed about this season - not by us - and its going to be one of the most competitive divisions for a while. Oxford have had a great start, but they aren't going to have it all there own way. Weymouth have come up and spent big. York look a very strong side and there's 7 or 8 more who will fancy their chances of the play offs at least. And that includes Stevenage - they've not had a good start, but have too many good players not to challenge for the top 5. We are one of the surprise packages so far and we want to continue our form for as long as possible. That wont be easy though - anybody can beat anybody on their day this season and consistency is going to be the key.

The Gaffer hasn't had cash to splash about, but he's brought in some real quality.Mark Ricketts has come in from Charlton and done great at the back for us - he's very solid and has hardly put a foot wrong. And Jon Keeling and Mark De Bolla have been fantastic in midfield for me. Jon has given us great width on the left and provided me with some excellent service. I played with Mark at Charlton and he's got a lot of quality and he's really happy about being back in midfield. He has asked to play up front at a few clubs, but he told the gaffer he was a midfielder and he's made the position his own so far.

I'm just delighted to be back on the pitch and playing again after a nightmare end to last season when I missed the last 3 months after coming back too soon from a hamstring tear."

(About the time when the wheels fell off last season!!)

"I'm not a great watcher and it was very frustrating not being able to help the lads out on the pitch when the gaffer had a load of injuries. But I worked hard over the Summer - came in on my own to do some running - and, apart from the odd knock, I've felt great and not missed a game yet. And its been great to get goals as well. I got 14 in 23 games last season and was well on the way to getting 20 before the injury."

(Same team plus Charlie all season last year. Where would we have finished?)

"I don't set myself scoring targets at the start of the season but always aim to break the 20 goal barrier - and I'm backing myself to do that this time. I've always been confident in my own ability - and if I get chances I will score"

Also in Sunday's NLP, confirmation from Mark De Bolla that 'De Bolla' rather than 'DeBolla' is the preferred spelling, and 'Bol-la' rather than 'Bo-lla' is the correct pronunciation.
