Sheffield artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and the Human League have a long tradition of topping the pop charts, but the Steel City has now racked up a number one spot it will be less keen to crow about: the UK’s car crime hotspot.

According to a study by insurer Norwich Union, car owners in the south Yorkshire city are five times more likely to have their car stolen than those living anywhere else in the UK. The figures are based on claims received by the insurance firm reporting car thefts over the past three years.

Grimsby was second on the car theft blacklist, with nearby Hull third, Leeds fourth and Middlesbrough fifth.

The study also found that thieves tend to favour old bangers over shiny new high-performance sports cars, with cheaper, older cars much more likely to be stolen than newer, more expensive models.

More than 80% of cars stolen over the past three years were made before the year 2000, with the far-from glamorous Ford Orion the most-stolen car in the UK, closely followed by the Vauxhall Nova and the Rover Montego.
