Playing with formations

Sacha will definitely return to the squad ... don't really believe Ricketts cuts the mustard when reverting to defence - seems to me he's always having to recover ground lost to far too many players who get round him too easily ... having said that , tho , he did make a fantastic recovery or two yesterday in the final 10 mins .

'Reverting to defence'? He is a defender first and foremost though.

Does the simple things well and is rarely caught making an error.

Maybe the problem you identified with him (if it exists) will be less of an issue in a 4-4-2.

jc - currently we are playing 352 , with ricketts playing right midfield/wingback ... which is it ? As i said previously , yesterday he made a couple of fantastic clawbacks , but this is inevitable given our 3 man defence , and the opposition ( and St Allbran aren't the first team to do it ) pumping balls into our corners , resulting in either the wings hastily retreating or stretching our 3 centrals wide . Obviously the wings should retreat , and given his defensive mindedness perhaps this is what stops him rampaging too far forward and/or offloading the ball too early given space going forward . I never said he was incompetent , or suggested otherwise , I just feel there may be conflicts with what he is ( a defender) and how he is asked to play ( wingback ) . Yes , you are right , 442 may well change things , but how do you see him then - in the defence , or remaining on the right ?

Quite right. Apologies for the confusion - when I said Ricketts was a defender, I was of course referring to his natural position, rather than the role he's playing in at the moment.

In a 4-4-2, I assume he will play right-back.

I would play Ricketts ar right back, Opinel left back and Ross and Macca in the middle.

On the performances so far I would have thought Ricketts, Debolla and Keeling are pretty level as signing of the summer.

Ricketts may not be flashy but he rarely makes mistakes and his use of the ball and covering his fellow defenders is excellent. Obviously Debolla has weighed in with a few goals and Keeling can roast defenders but I suspect Ricketts is one of the earlier names on the teamsheet.

Remember that the only match that we started as 4-4-2 it was Peter Hawkins who occupied the right back slot, and IMO didn't put a foot wrong there.

Indeed - but he was only on the pitch for an hour, and a lot has happened since then.

Not nearly as much as has happened since those sad days of last season.

That said, the season is but a quarter over, suspensions and injuries have yet to 'significantly' impact on the team selection, to the extent that LD rarely has to make more than one change per game.

When we do have players missing, we can be assured that we do appear to have planty of cover in all departments.

I think that is the biggest difference to last season is the current strength within the squad.

How LD has managed this I dont know, but it is a great achievement on his part.

Very true, Hawkins has showed that he is capable of playing anywhere in the defence and James Smith has not been too shabby either.
Actually I would play Ross in the holding midfield position in front of the back four a la Patrick Viera which would be a bit unfortunate on Quinn who also hasn't done much wrong.
Who'd be a manager?
