Soccer: Ansell in to lift Billericay spirits

Soccer: Ansell in to lift Billericay spirits

Billericay Town boss Gary Calder has gone for experience in an attempt to recover from a triple blow which has hit the club so severely in the past week.

Town fans were reeling from the shock news that leading scorers Roy Essandoh and Martin Carthy had been sold to Ryman Premier rivals Grays Athletic in a £10,000 Christmas Eve deal which brought front runner Andy Douglas in the opposite direction.

Then, in Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Aylesbury, key central defender Ollie Adedeji was carried off through injury.

It was confirmed yesterday that the knee ligament problem suffered by the ex-Aldershot and Canvey man will sideline him for four to six weeks.

Now Calder has moved swiftly to bring in highly-experienced Gary Ansell from Division One North promotion-chasers Harlow Town.

Ansell has high-level experience with a number of clubs including Barnet and St Albans and a big attraction for the New Lodge club is that he is capable of filling a number of different playing roles.

Billericay chairman Rod Moore admitted last week that the sale of Essandoh and Carthy was carried out purely for "business reasons" but there is no doubt that their departure, plus the news regarding Adedeji, has left the club and its supporters at a low ebb.

Calder was disappointed that his troops failed to finish off an Aylesbury side who finished with nine men after having two players sent off.

But he praised the battling spirit of his players who he claimed "worked their socks off" in the Billericay cause.

The home camp are hopeful that, despite the deluge of rain to hit the South Essex area over the past two days, the New Lodge playing surface will be fit for tomorrow's New Year's Day home game (3pm) with a Boreham Wood side likely to include a striker who started the season at Billericay -- ex Aldershot man Scott Forrester.

Was slightly worried when I saw the headline that our General manager and hon sec, Ian had been drafted in to play <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Don't know much about the new player except that the ryman review has him as having played 30 league games (and 9 as sub) in two seasons at stalebuns, scoring 11 times. He was also in the Ryman league rep squad in nov 2000.

This looks a good signing for Billericay Gary Ansell is no relations to Ian Ansell at the Club and according to the Harlow website is a Forward who has played at this level before.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Ollie Adedeji a very speedy and quick recovery from his injury.

See you all at New Lodge tomorrow.

It's a bit early to be having a pop at Ansell given he's yet to kick a ball for us! The intresting thing is that we have a variety of options in attack with different style players - Wallace the target man, Douglas the Poacher, Fewings - holding the ball up involving the other players and Ansell who I believe plays a bit off a front man. We need to strengthen in centre midfield with Carthy gone, but with McD and Fewings back at least we should be able to name a full bench!

Depends what you consider to be a "proven goalscoring record" CUR, I would suggest that there is nobody playing up front in the whole of the Ryman prem who have consistantly performed over 2 or 3 seasons. Probably Stafford Browne is the closest thing around to this and he doesn't come cheap - Grays were reportedly paying him £650 a week at the start of the season. Douglas will hopefully, given a couple of games, start looking like the striker he was before the stabbing, whilst hopefully Wallace can continue his good recent form. Ansell reputedly creates more than he scores so will be interesting to see who plays up front when we finally get a game.

Position 1 - Up front, wasn't too great
Position 2 - In the bar smoking and drinking meant position 1 wasn't seen too often
Position 3 - On the treatment table - as a result of position 1 being filled (once normally) then moves onto position 2
Position 4 - On the bench, never fit - as a result of the following chain of events - position 1 then 3 then 2.

Very Very Very thick - didn't know what the word notorious meant.

Very Very Greedy - "earn your money" was shouted at him at various occasions

Very Very Essex bloke mentality - offered to take us all out in the bar once (but didn't)

Very Very Very wants to play for Canvey and thinks his own supporters are idiots - famously once heard in caveys bar (while injured drinking and smoking) "look at our supporters coming all this way in the rain to see this, idiots, I wish I played for you lot"

Very Very Essex - this may be a good thing for you lot.

Doubt he'll play against us, he'll be injured!

OI! ANSELL EARN YER MONEY!
