While I would agree with you that Steve T. would make my all time Slough Team since I have been watching them, for me since 1966-the best and most skilful player was Terry Reardon(known then as Merlin),so to take your question up,I would say---

196o's- Terry Reardon

1970's -Terry Reardon

1980's--Steve Thompson

1990's--T.Angus

2000's--Roach(when he tried)

But suffice to say the last two named would not get in any all time Slough team IMO.

1980's and 1990's-Steve Thompson[should have played Professional football.I wish we had a player like him now!

2000's Hard to say as we're in such a poor league. My favourite player is Dean Palmer,as he plays full of spirit and heart. If he keeps playing as well as he is I can see him going to a higher, bigger club which will be our loss.Paul Barrowcliff is the most consistent.Sammy Winston could still play a higher standard and Veli Hakki was becoming a very good non-league player and could only have got better,he is sorely missed from our team now.

60s - Toss up - Terry Reardon

70s - Geoff Anthony (Welsh Amateur International winger) ran all day, great crosses, never stopped trying

80s - Thommo without a doubt

90s - Danny Bolt

00s - No one deserves it yet, can I get back to you on that one

Anybody remember Les Hartridge in the 60S.And of course the best centre Half John Delaney? Thers always Peter Lowen and Bernie Gogan who once scored 10 goals between them in a 14 -1 victory against Hungerford.

Yes Les Hartridge could and should have been a professional-and as your talking centre halves-there was J.Delaney-K.Mead-Alf D'Arcy(not much more than about 5ft.3in.but had it all)E.Young-and Bateman(whose christian name escapes me-thats the first Bateman not the one who played under Dave Russell).

Of course what a lot of younger fans don't realise,is that these players were as good if not better than a lot of todays conference and third division players, but most of them had good jobs outside of the football league and were better off.

Youre obviously same era as me. What about Bobby Hatt goalscoring midfielder signed from Maidenhead. Remember some sort of scandal about Les Hartridge , illegal player or something? Little Taff Davies who played in same team as Delaney also Malcolm Scott(not good) but hard working and tackling.Bobby (curly) Stevens a fast winger who scored 4 or 6 (cant remember exactly)in a 10 - 0 win v carshalton.

Remember Blyth Spartans in cup year ( horrible people some wearing NUFC colours ran on pitch and tried to break goalpost). Chris Mullen another ex Maidenhead player

I was very fortunate that Geoff Anthony [who was also excellent at Wycombe] was my PE teacher. He was a superb footballer, athlete and coach who helped me a huge amount [as did his predecessor, Lou Temell, who some of you more mature fans may remember from his Wycombe days.] Times gone by!

To answer some of these comments, yes anonymous we must be of similar era's,I first saw Slough when I was 10,I had two relations that were Slough Town players way back.Anyway the thing I think you are refering to about Les Hartridge(who was two years above me at school)is that he was being chased by Northampton Town, and I believe he may have played for them in some capacity but would not turn full time pro, because he had an apprenticeship with Andrew Weather- foils along the Bath Road,so people questioned whether or not he was stll officially an amateur.

And yes Bobby Hatt was a great player who would walk into any conference side today.

To answer the post below yours,John Ritchie and Peter Cruse went from Slough to Arsenal-Ritchie I believe had a few first team games,Ritchie was found by the late great Tommy Lawrence and turned into an overnight sensation,in one year in the life of Slough Town there has not been a better striker-but he disappeared from the limelight as quickly as he came.

My all time team would be:-Teale/Barron(to hard to seperate)Reid----Young-----Delaney-----Eaton.

Thompson-----Day----Reardon----L.Hartridge.

Ritchie-------J.Adams.

five subs:K.Mead,B.Hatt,R.Haider,J.Connell,Brown.

Given the same levels of fitness,I'd back that team to win a few Conference titles.

I thought John Richie and Peter Cruise were signed by Arsenal, I think they signed the day we played Maidenhead in a local derby which btw we won easily....those where the days ;-)

How about all the Slough players that moved on to pro football,

I'll start with a few

Paul Baron......Plymouth

Alan Paris.......Watford

Tony Dennis....Cambridge

Eric Young.......Brighton

Mickey Droy.....Chelsea

John Delaney....Bournemouth ??

Thanks for reply MOP Tops , by the way anonymous posting you refer to was me, I am just getting used to wonders of web and am an amateur as far as IT goes. Anyhow was Les Hartridge at Slough Tec School? As for your team, I maybe go for John Ford at full back instead of Reid although cannot remenber whether he played on right or left.Cant really comment on Steve Thompson as I had moved out of area when he played but I would always find a place for Hatt purely because he was worth 15 goals a season.Surely the Brown you name as sub is not Terry who I would compare to Squiddly Diddly, all arms and legs. However I seem to recollect a striker named Jimmy Brown who was certainly more skilful.

there were 2 brothers who played for Slough in 70s. Roy and Barry Davies, I seen to recollect that Roy went pro but might be wrong. What about Alan Gane but cant remember what team.Im sure either Ritcihie or Cruse or maybe both also played for Hereford after they were released from Arsenal.

More Answers for Anonymous, yes you are right Les Hartridge went to Slough Tech(Herchel Grammar)who in the days of Bob Gibbs as manager provided one or two players for Slough,Alan Binfield in goal,Dave Thomas centre half and the flying winger Terry Wise, also Slough Grammar provided a fair few players-back in the days when most of the team were local.

Yes the Brown I meant was Jimmy Brown. And John Ford I think he played both right and left back-when Mickey Bell was left back-Ford was Right and when Ralph Miller(who incidentally I believe turned pro)played right I think Ford was LEFT.
