Another enjoyable game at the fleet despite the poor referee decisions made and the lack of decisions that should have been made, but there you ago. Nearly won it at the death. Had a sneaky feeling that Onome thought that he was off side and just dwelt that fatal second. The keeper did well and the rebound never fell kindly, it seemed to be like that all afternoon.

Special praise must go to Peter Hawkins who played out of skin at the back, keeping out a big pair of forwards, keeping his cool, good skills and distribution, never ruffled.

I thought that Ross Mark and James also played well, despite us letting in two goals, the corner and the cross that led to Exeter goals were quality. For the second goal there was no audible call from Lance, James had to defend it, just unlucky, the cross was wicked.

exeter had obviously done their homework and battled tenaciously in all areas, but the Fleet never gave up.

Well done Liam, making his mind up early to change the game, it worked a treat.

2-2 sound and so nearly 3-2 which would have been no injustice.

Just to sum it all up. Peter Hawkins - Immense

Young James, no audible call from Lance, he had to defend it, great cross, real quality.

The lads showed great grit and determination.

We were second best throughout the first half I thought and there goal always looked likely to come. They were cruising at 2-0 and should never have let it slip.

Wasn't impressed with Slatter when he came on, seemed to have a very poor touch.

Credit has to be given to Daish however, for lifting the side for that wonderful second half display.

Some great noise also at the Plough, long may that continue.

9 games and 15 points. Would of grabbed it with two hands at the start of the season.

I actually made Hawkins my man of the match. Not only a giant at the back, got forward a lot in the second half helping Keeling out, and put in some very decent crosses.
The difficulty with having so many players in form is they can only be ousted by injury.
I did think we looked more composed and less congested when we went 442, not sure how R & D play attacking wise, but I wouldn't mind betting it will need to be a backs to the wall job on Tuesday.
I would go for
Cronin
Ricketts Smith Smith Hawkins
Slatter De Bolla Quinn Keeling
MacDonald Sodje

Subs: Mott Coleman Ekoku Opinel Moore

More for continuing where we left off rather than anything subversive.

Hopefully McCarthy will be fit and we can go back to the line-up that has done the business this season.

I think that Liam is walking on water at the moment. Any team he picks will be good enough for me.

I wonder if its worth a try Hawkins and Macca but I think that you are probably right, if its not broke, why break it up.

In truth, if LD is going to stick with 3 at the back, he has the option of perming any three from MaCarthy, Smith, Smith and Hawkins. All are playing really well and none actually deserve to be dropped or left out.

I went for Smith, Smith and Hawkins on the basis they are the present incumbants.Until such time any of them get a knock, feel unwell, get injured or suspended, it really doesn't affect the defence too much by leaving well alone.

As has so wisely be said on here umpteen times, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I have been a cricket statistician for 35 years, David. Given the time, I could probably make Tony Butterball Battersby look half decent.

I have no doubt Macca brings his wealth of experience into a comparitively inexperienced back three, but Hawkins does the same role.

Smudger was a little unlucky with the own goal yesterday, their other goal was a very good header.

To only concede one goal by a Exeter player given their pace, movement and pedigree was actually not bad.

There will of course come a time when a back 4 is preferred, it will be interesting who the centre halves will be then.

I don't think Hawkins looked as assured as McCarthy usually does; McCarthy's heading, tackling and reading of the game is better, and he's an excellent motivator. Hawkins did put a fairly good account of himself in, but if McCarthy is fit, I think he'll be picked ahead of hawkins. I prefer Hawkins as a full back anyway; I don't think he has the presence of a centre-back. Despite his reasonably good performance yesterday, I'd pick McCarthy every time.

I have to say I'm confused at this 'Stephen' Hawkins adoration. It just goes to show everyone sees a different game out there. I must have been asleep while he put in his 'very decent crosses', because I certainly didn't see any. Maybe a confusion between 'Hawkins' and 'DeBolla'. Could happen...

At half-time I was almost ready to use my 3G phone to report on the, to use another man's phrase, 'dross' that was being served up. Dross is all relative, though, and, whilst I was slightly disappointed by the flatness of the team in the first-half (especially having heard of our greatness aginst Grays), we do look a better team than we have done in a while.

I was particularly pleased with Liam's boldness to bring on Sodje so swiftly, since his entry gave us the strength and power up front that we were lacking in the first half.

Over the next few weeks we'll meet new challenges in the shape of Rushden and Diamonds and St Albans, as well as a tough match against an in form Dagenham team; however, with our excellent form and our renewed character, one can only hope for good results in the weeks to come.

Nice one, so you don't really need to get out more then ?? zzzzzzzzz!!!

Reply if you want but I am not going to respond to your posts any longer, you have won, you have ground me down. I admit it, I just don't have your ability to be so boring/negative/miserable ( delete as applicable....and they're just the printable words !!)

However, one thing, I haven't forgotten your committment to buying the lads a beer sometime !!

Cheers,

You must have been asleep!!

I take your point though Macca is a leader and very positive.

However with all this chat about strength of squad in depth, its nice to know we have reliable alternatives, potentially 4 centre halfs and 4 full backs! from 6 defenders.

What do you think?
