no he hasnt, the ball went out of play so until the keeper kicks it the ball is out of play

As errors go, that's a pretty big one <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> I think it's more apt to punish the assistant, but I suppose the ref is ultimately responsible.

 

However, if the ball was in play and an outside influence (aka a supporter, a dog) had knocked the ball in, the goal would and should have been allowed to stand.

 

Your point about Linney is somewhat different though, as he would almost certainly miss!

Not sure that's true. There have been occasions where fans have ran on the pitch and kicked the ball into the net, only for the ref to award a drop ball.

 

If the ref kicks the ball in the goal it would stand, as the ref is considered a "participant" in the game, same goes for a lino!!!

If you watch, when the ball is played through the other attacker stops and moves toward the ball. Despite that he did not touch it, his team gains an advantage from him being in that position as the defenders all stop.

In this USL clip, Miami player, Romario, is in ... all » an obvious offside position when the ball is touched by his teammate, Gil. Gil plays the ball forward almost directly toward Romario. However, Romario neither touches nor makes any play for the ball. Furthermore, there is no opponent close enough to be reasonably obstructed or impeded in any way, nor does Romario make any gesture or movement which could reasonably be considered deceptive or distracting. Gil proceeds to run forward, takes control of his own pass , moves further downfield from Romario, and then passes the ball back to Romario who ultimately scores the goal. The goal was valid and, in particular, there was no offside offense during any part of this sequence of play. See I would've given that for offside because I think he is interferring with play. The fact that he never touches the ball and leaves it for the initial passer is neither here nor there, he still moved for the ball.

The fact that he was about a couple of yards away from the ball and did make motions towards it would have been enough for the flag to go up in my opinion.

Me! If they are anywhere near the ball the flag goes up, let the ref make the decision, probably wrong but in my view if they are on the pitch, they are interfeering with play!!
