I feared pre season that it was only a matter of time untill it showed,we are just to darn slow at the back,we cant play a sweeper with this system,so if we we push line half way we are always going to be under pressure on the break with long balls ect,if use we a man deep midfield he has to be quick.

RE MICHAEL. Yes but with this system we cant play two centre halfs that lack pace one has to have the legs,i really feel that Trott Wild and Donny are very good players, but we need that pace coupled with that deep midfield player,i know its easy to say and put on paper, but im sure its not to far off the truth.

Whilst, i agree that we are a bit slow at the back, you have to compromise somehow-its difficult to get a 6'2'' centre back with pace at this level.!!

I think CW and JD make a good solid combination, and i don't think they are that slow anyway !!

What they do need is better PROTECTION from midfield.

We should be eliminating more attacking play from midfield before it even reaches the our defence.

For allthe talk of a striker and defender, i actually think priority is a quick defensive midfield player.

(here's an off the wall thought re: a striker to give us a different option if its not happening for DH.-what about Trotty as a centre forward-i reckon he could put it about a bit, win a few in air and give Danny something to feed off )

Depends where you look! Ollie Schulz is a great centre back. He won nearly everything in the air last nite and to be honest him and edd vahid looked a class above all the margate players.

So we're out of the railway cup-big deal. "Ivor" good idea-let's get back on "track" by getting a few more "points" in the bag. The team were carrying too many "passengers" last night and Robin will have to get the team "coupling" by making them "train" a bit harder and that'll be a "platform" to build on-could be just the "ticket". Yeah we're feeling a little "tender" by this result but you'd have to be "loco" to think it really meant anything.

And I'm not going to comment on the above other than to say that "We have gone of the "RAILS" temporarily" and as you say we will be back "ON TRACK" soon I'm sure. The "JOURNEY" will re-commence shortly & "NORMAL SERVICE" be resumed.A hat-trick of wins in our next three games will be just the "TICKET". A winning Saturday this week will hopefully be the "SIGNAL" of better times to come.

Gees its like a busmans holiday on here sometimes. l.o.l. (Very good Hornet).

Good puns you lot!

I agree totally with with MM and Angle, we lack mobility in defensive midfield. In Protheroe we have a good distributor, free-kick taker, forward midfielder. I don't think McKimm is the man to play behind him, good lad though he is.

Yes Deen would be ideal, so would the likes of Jay Saunders, but by the sound of it we won't be getting either.

Also totally agree with what you said RayW: I made Edd Vahid and Ollie Schulz easily the best on the pitch yesterday, and a good example of what we are lacking.

I would also suggest we lost by thinking slow. Ramsgate didn't waste a second getting the ball forward or taking set pieces (eg. the long attacking throws). We farted around with ping pong passes and laborious build-ups, which only served to emphasise the huge gap between our midfield and our strikers.

Rams were more mobile thoroughout the team. Did you notice Dean Hill, left back, winning a great defensive tackle, moving the ball forward quick, and being there in the box when the goal went in. At that point there was a man covering his position.

For anyone who missed Saturday's match, Ramsgate was just a continuation of it. Ok we tried out a few youngsters against Rams, but really the difference in the scorelines was mainly that Boreham Wood put away their chances better.

We don't want to go back to the bad old days when we were a disorganised rabble, but we have the skill and experience; all we need is quickness of foot and of thought.

Not to have a go at Robin: his record speaks for itself, but I wholly agree with the need for a pacy defensive midfielder. As others have said, defence begins in midfield. You can't rely on a static back four to repel everything.

Lets just put a few things into perspective. Ck said that know way could his players play 4-4-2 and i feel this is coming to roost cos Rt cant get them to play it either.

We have been flattred which is often the way witha new broom.

Admittedly the forwards are good sometimes very good and we will score goals posibly lots of them. The defence is poor a not too stronger word. All the gmes i have seen have been disappointing at the back very poor sometimes.

Now RT is a defender so he should know what to do but if this haemorriging of goals is not sorted out you can soon kiss goodbye to promotion top 5 etc. cos this lot of players will be seeking pastures new pretty quick. sorry but this is the hard truth. I'll pop up to training in bexleyheath tomorrow and have a look. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

disagree with that, CK had different players and Trott has bought in players that can play the 4-4-2. We played 4-4-2 against Chelmsford and we played very well. Lets not lose faith guys, we lost a game that in a cup that in my eyes is a waste of time and against Boreham a lof their goals came from defensive mistakes.

Just reviewing the above posts, I think we have all overlooked the fact that on Tuesday Standen was played at the back of midfield to fulfil the role we have been discussing.

Worth a try, although he can't head the ball and looked less at home than he usually does at wide left. Plus his temperament problems let him down too often.

No, we need a new player deep midfield.

I'm trying to be a bit of a "wagon" this thread so you lot better be on your "guard".

Lets hope our wingers don't put so many crosses astray on Saturday and come up with a bit more "level crossing".

The puns just keep rolling along - cor! I'm getting so good at this I'm even doing it accidently now.

4-4-2 is the way definately, but we do tend to defend a bit too high up the pitch imo, and do need that defensive midfield player to cut out much that is reaching the defence.

I remain convinced that the defence personnel are ok, but its the midfield not stemming enough attacks

But when we used to sit back & soak up all that was thrown at us (kinnear days) it wasnt right either.I would much prefer to have the skilled attacking players we have now pushing up rather than sitting back.A need for a couple of experienced defenders that can both read the game & show some pace is the answer without a doubt. However I agree also that the midfield has to do more, for when we are pushing up we MUST try to regain the ball from any defensive clearance & mantain that pressure on opponents defences.Play in their half & no need for such a quality defence then. But it dosent always work that way & because it dosent those couple of class defenders is the way round it.Oates has improved no-end but his pace leaves a lot to be desired even though that has improved this season. Its still not enough. Wild had a cracker first full game but has sadly lacked since. He will come back with better games though I'm sure. Trotty does his job well for his age & I would rather see him at the back as first choice anyday & with the players we have.Donovan,I'm sorry but he is way too slow.He dosent mark a man he stands square to them with space available & when the ball is lofted over the top, that player has a head start on him. Donovan will never be quick enough to overcome that.

We are too static & slow at the back & we are not reading the game.

With that extra pace back there long high balls pushed over our defence can be retrievable.Either that or go back to having a sweeper. B.T.W How are you Bill?

One final thing. We must not retreat when there is pace raining down us.To stand our ground is the answer as the player has to either be an exceptional one to overcome a brick wall or be extremely lucky. Just so long as cover is available should they get lucky. They must not be allowed to see more of that goal every other split second.Retreating gives them that look of the goal & is just giving them an invite to shhot at a wide target.
