Ramsgate's 12th man - and I don't mean the ref or lino

I am sure much is going to be said about this game in other threads so I am going to start things off with a slightly different angle on things. Before I go on I am not taking anything away from our fans here but once again Ramsgate's (yes, I know most were possibly at their first game and only because it was Margate) got behind their team far more vocally than we did. We had 350 fans there (yes I did count them) but as always these were potted around the ground and in disjointed groups. Ramsgate probably had a few more but it seemed a hell of a lot more because a) a large chunk of them were grouped together and b)when they sung there were at times a 100 or so singing. We never, ever seem to get this and even when we take large followings away there is only ever around a dozen singing at most. Even at home games, visiting fans (Slough for example) group together and get behind the side as a unit while, once again, we have only a few people singing.

On nights like tonight, when local pride is at stake (for those of us that saw it as more than a Mickey Mouse game), the fans can really spur a side on and the passion from the Red side both on the pitch was superior to ours, as much as it pains me to say it. On the pitch it is more understandable as they are the local lads with a club who have played second fiddle to us for many many years but why we only get a small group of fans getting behind the side vocally leaves me wondering why. Probably because the nature of a lot of the songs can easily offend a lot of our supporters. Opposing goalkeepers are always going to be targets for stick and I am all for that, especially if they are a bit chubby, have played for a rival or have made a howler. But all to often they are greeted with some sort of paeophiliic abuse simply for the crime of being in goal for an opponent.

Perhaps it is time to stop the 'sleeps with his sisters kids' type comments and throw all the efforts into getting behind the side. Don't get me wrong, those who do sing do, generally, do so for the full 90 minutes but wouldn't it be nice to have three or four times as many people singing? Perhaps then we will hear the voices over the drum. How we get other people to get behind the side like that I am not sure but surely some toning down of the swearing and needless abuse will help. I myself have not got any particular problem with swearing and can see a humourous side in some of the abuse but a lot of people are not as broadminded as I am, and even I think some goes too far.

Tonight was painful for me, not only watching us getting beat on the pitch but also as I never thought I would ever see us play at Southwood and feel that their support was better than ours. This may seem harsh but it is the first time I have seen us outnumbered, outsung and out-passioned there.

As always, I am sure that there will be people who disagree with what I have said and some who may think I am talking nonsense. But I really do think that if a bunch of fans group together to get behind their side rather than spread out and not be able to provide any decent vocal support can really spur a side on.

Rant Over!

We sang more then them until they scored. They only sung 4 times in the first half and a few more times before they scored, but remember there was a big difference between the two sides, to them it was a cup final and for us it was more like a pre-season game and the amount of support that turned up for us today showed that we did not really care about it much. I came out feeling the same as before i went in. Although we HAVE to beat them in the league and we will do, because they have done what they wanted to do and that is beat us in a 'competitive' game and they have done it.

Steve B...are you Cookie?

Nope, but have been watching the side for twenty years and have built up a bit of a knowledge of what annoys people on and off the pitch.
As for the comment to Rob about the language not stopping our choir, I think the point I made that there are now only a dozen or so that sing home or away means that something is putting the others off. I know a good few people who wont sing because they dont want to amongst people shouting abuse. Don't get me wrong, in the past I have been part of, and even the instigator, of some wrongful chants and abuse but as I have grown up I now watch Margate fans, at times, cringing about what is being sung. As I said before, I am not against giving oppenents players/management/supporters stick and banter - I have started 'Cheer up Jimmy Ward' songs at Ramsgate v Margate FA Cup games within the past 15 years - and do use the odd swear word or twenty in everyday life, so I am not preaching righteousness. I am just simply pointing out that there is definately a reason why only a few people group together and sing, and having spoken to quite a few people, the language, abuse and nature of songs puts a lot of people off. In my younger days that sort of singing would have probably made me even more interested in joining in but the likes of me are way outnumbered at Margate by those who do not feel the need to be abusive or swear and just want to enjoy the day.

I agree with SteveB. A lot of the songs contain foul mouth negative abuse that is entirely unnecessary. I will join in a song of SUPPORT, but not those that abuse. The odd ribald ditty of hilacrity is OK as long as it is not foul mouthed.

I know that if you asked the players what they want they would ask for songs of support.

Have to agree that some of the childish stuff that is sung or shouted is cringeworthy and definitely puts me off. I think really what we are getting at here is we need a bigger 'choir' for home games and away games if possible. But definitely home games and the local aways such as last night. If others are happy to give this a shot for Saturday's game shall we have a bash at joining the choir (I guess this means standing near them) and really giving the lads some strong vocal encouragement. If it resorts to childish abuse I'll move away. I want to hear and join in with pro Margate songs for 90 minutes, not some rubbish about what the keeper's missus is up to or such like. Anyone else in favour of giving this a go and seeing if this thread can help put a stop to the crap? Might as well be proactive on this seeing as we have a massive game on Saturday and the support last night left me embarrassed too. Hopefully one of the choir picks up on this and can confirm that they will pass the message on so we all know the situation. Surely there's a few of us that read this forum that are prepared to give it a go! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

i agree blatant insults are not worthy but most footy songs do contain the odd swear word whether it be premiership championship or lower leagues most of the time it is just banter but there has to be a bit of give and take if people are going to expect all pro margate songs to be swear free then we will eventually have nothing to sing

p.s bully you wrote alot of them anyway lololol

in the ashford years me dave the kirbys june (mike who still leads) and many more were the the people who sang, for what ever reason it was always fun and was always many involved, and often quite loud.

then there were times like at maidenhead where i dont think ive heard more noise, and the stand was rocking.

but when we returnd home diffrent people took the lead and we all stepd back, diffrent songs (more swearing) the older ones stopd singing and suddenly there was a totally diffrent feel.

what i can say is its just not fun like it was there.
