Matt Gadsby - Hinckley United Official Statement.

Hinckley United Football Club regretfully announce the tragic death of Matthew Gadsby.

The 27 year-old collapsed midway through the first half of the Conference North game with Harrogate Town at Wetherby Road on Saturday. Paramedics treated the central defender on the pitch and worked on him for over an hour after he suddenly collapsed on the field of play. No other player was involved. He was taken to Harrogate Royal Infirmary but failed to respond to treatment.

Chairman Kevin Downes said: “This is an absolute tragedy and our thoughts are with Matthew’s family and friends. Incidents like this put everything into perspective and no-one can quite come to terms with what has happened. The medics were out on the pitch within seconds and their treatment was first class and they did everything they could along with the staff at the hospital which was next door to the ground. Matthew had made a big impact on the football club during his time at the Marston’s Stadium and he will be sadly missed by everyone.”

Sutton Coldfield born Gadsby began his career as a trainee at Walsall before breaking his way into the first team and making 23 first team appearances. He then moved to Mansfield Town and Kidderminster Harriers extending his Football League experience before he dropped into Non League football with Forest Green Rovers. Swadlincote based Gadsby – a builder by profession - signed a one-year deal with Hinckley United in the summer and had been in outstanding form.

Mr Gadsby leaves behind a young daughter, and a wife, Sarah.

Hinckley United’s game away at Moor Green on Tuesday night has been postponed after this tregedy.

BEST WISHES TO HIS FAMILY!!!

Sure Gadsby scored for Forest Green against us two years back. A real tragedy that puts the game of football in perspective.

I haven't sen this posted elsewhere but very sad news taken from the Enfield Town forum. I couldn't find the match report to see if either of these lads lined up against us earlier in the season. I hope Alastair Heselton pulls through.

Dreadful news, Simon Patterson did indeed play against us. Let us all hope that Alistar Heselton makes a full recovery.

Even less publicised was this one, that I just read on Isthmian Fans tonight:

"Eastbourne Borough Football Club and Eastbourne Borough Youth Football Club regretfully announce that a young Eastbourne Borough player, Josh Briggs, collapsed on the pitch during the Under 15's fixture versus Hastings Town Youth Football Club on Sunday the 10th of September. No other player was involved. Paramedics treated the player at the ground and he was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital but failed to respond to treatment."

15 years old! that is a shock.

what is the cause of death when players collapse on the pitch like marc vivien foe did and the 2 recent non league players?

I would hazard at guess that it's usually undiagnosed heart conditions like heavy murmurs and such. You wouldn't realise you'd have it until you recognise the symptoms or it was too late.

I remember reading during the close season that a couple of players from league clubs had to give up their career because of heart conditions.

These top clubs have the personel and resources to be able to perform simple diagnoses themselves and get them double checked by a doctor, but there just isn't enough money in lower and non league football for clubs to perform such examinations.

One theory I've heard is a heart defect combined with over training. It happened up here to a young Rugby League player a while back. It seems to be getting frighteningly more frequent now, or we/media are looking out for it more.

there probably arent any more than there always have been, but with every single one being reported in one form of media or another you get to hear about them. but if the extra cover helps someone get checkecd out and prevents even just one incident like this it, something will be gained

That's one thing I've heard also.

That Egyptian player who died earlier this month, Mohamed Abdelwahab dropped stone dead during a training session.

My Girlfriend has a small heart murmur so she can't lift heavy objects such as weights at the gym or play any board or arcade games that involve electric shocks in case it disrupts the impulses.

Combine that with a professional training regime and events like these are the possible consequences.

Cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the muscle of the heart is abnormal in the absence of an apparent cause.

In HCM, septal measurements may be in the range of 1.3mm to 6.0+mm. Heart muscle may also thicken in normal individuals as a result of high blood pressure or prolonged athletic training. Furthermore, there is a fine line between and athletic heart and a heart with HCM.
