Report from Biggleswade United – FA Cup Preliminary Round Saturday 2nd September

Biggleswade United 2 AFC Hornchurch 4

One level in the FA pyramid, a wage bill in excess of £2,500 per week, 100 travelling supporters and two very dubious penalty decisions were all that separated the two sides in this FA Cup Preliminary Round tie at Second Meadow on Saturday. And it has to be said that many of the United supporters were left mystified at the end of the afternoon as to how some of the players in Hornchurch jerseys could justify such a high wage bill. Other than the impressive midfield playmaker, Mark Janney and their experienced, towering defender, Jim Mcfarlane, there was little to inspire and although the blustery wind played its part much more was expected of the Essex side.

United were without the services of Ross Kane and Martin Russell (work commitments) and striker Keith Thomas (holiday) but were able to bring in Graeme Buchanan to the midfield. However, for much of the first half the United midfield were redundant as the Urchins plumped for the high ball tactic that left players and supporters with stiff necks and little to talk about over their half time cuppa other than a cheeky goal from United’s Robbie O’Dell and a woeful penalty decision from the man in the middle.

O’Dell’s goal in the 28th minute left the Urchins’ supporters stunned in to silence. It came on the back of fifteen minutes of sustained pressure from the visitors that had seen United ‘keeper, Dean Bull pull off a string of quality saves, stout defending by Danny Bennett and Simon Catmur and a disallowed goal from the Urchins’ Kris Lee.

A free kick from Goldsmith, ten yards inside the Urchins half, was played low thus avoiding the gargantuan Hornchurch defenders to the nimble footed O’Dell who flicked it past Urchins’ keeper Dale Brightly to make it 1-0.

But the Essex side came back even stronger and once again Bull found himself in the firing line saving from Janney and Greg Tiffen. Then came the penalty decision that left the United contingent fuming. The Urchins’ Kris Lee took full advantage of an outstretched leg on the edge of the United penalty area and the big number nine plummeted to the ground. Former Spurs player Janney made no mistake from the spot and saved his sides blushes to go in all-square at the interval.

No sooner had the spectators made their way from the tea hut than the Urchins went ahead much to the chagrin of the United bench as it was such a woefully soft goal to give away. Urchins striker David Sadler played the ball wide to Tiffen on the left and the United back line failed to clear his cross as it fell to Lee who tapped in from close range. But it took just two minutes for United’s reply. Skipper and United’s man of the match, Gary Jackson was justified in his reaction to a dreadful tackle from behind on the half way line that resulted in a superbly executed free kick from Nicky Stillwell. Rising above his marker, Goldsmith flicked the ball over the Urchins’ keeper and turned to see it drop under the crossbar for 2-2.

As expected the Urchins came back with a vengeance and in the 54th minute a low strike from Cross found the back of the net much to the joy of the six noisy Urchin supporters behind Bull’s goal. Undaunted however, United continued to make inroads in to the Hornchurch half and Buchanan and O’Dell were unlucky not to pull the sides level. Buchanan’s chipped shot slipped over the cross bar and O’Dell took too long teeing up his shot when well placed.

Once again though it was the man in the middle who struck the cruel blow for United. A speculative strike from Tiffen struck the arm of United’s Sam Brown and despite United protests the referee awarded the Ryman League side yet another penalty. Janney’s first attempt was brilliantly saved by Bull but the midfield man snapped up the rebound to make it 4-2.

United’s never say die attitude saw them continue to press forward and their passing football at least made up for the tiresome long ball tactics of their opponents – not a style for the football purist but clearly it ticks the boxes of the Hornchuch supporters! In the end though it was a fitter and stronger Hornchurch that played out the final fifteen and although Stuart English came close to reducing the deficit with a well taken free kick it was the travelling supporters who were making their plans for the trip to County neighbours Redbridge. And if you should happen across the Hornchurch match report on their website – can someone tell a United supporter how they managed to squeeze in 300 supporters in to the Second Meadow stand? Maybe the reporter had had one too many beers and was seeing treble.

United’s next home game is a Challenge Trophy tie on Tuesday 12th September against Division One side Kentish Town who have asked for the tie to be switched to United as they are experiencing problems with their landlord, Hendon FC. Kick Off 7.45pm. This Saturday United Reserves entertain Ampthill Town Reserves at Second Meadow. Kick Off 3pm.

United: Bull, Stillwell, Scarisbrick, Catmur (Newton), Bennett, Buchanan, Brown (Manning), Goldsmith (Harnett), O’Dell, Jackson, English.

the best bit is his description of the two biggleswadian goals...

one was a scuffed free kick that flew off some fckers ankle and the other one was a soft header that took at least 20 seconds to go in as dale slipped on the goalmouth mud.....
