Both teams had good chances in the first half to go in with the lead. Ross smiths is obviousley uncomfortable at right back . Lance sometimes doesnt call for the ball.

Second half we started poor , but got more comfortable as the game went on.

I fail to understand why lance kicks the ball long , trying to hit opposition on the break.

he does not have the accuracy and so late in a game , away form home , maybe we need to consolidate out position , calm the play down and build from the back.

John Keeling again had a good first half , but halifax contained him better in the second half . I sometimes wonder , whether , instead of taking the player on , he should try and win a corner , killing time , and giving us a chance of a clean cross.

On the whole , we are playing better away from home then for a long while , getting results. Next step is to try and turn the odd draw into 3 points.

Tuesday will be a true measure of how far we have come

Believe me, that was a solid performance and that's what early season is all about. The game Fleet are trying to play means they need to have confidence n belief in each other, which is difficult to build. They kept their 'shape' really well, particularly in wide positions and I think that bodes well.

I'd love to see them with 2 or wins under their belt!

As referred to above, Luke Moore went off with what looked like a back injury after falling awkwardly. Ricketts seemed to have a bit of a limp when he came off too, but of course there's no way of us knowing how serious (if at all) those knocks are.

Ross plays on the left side of the three-man defence at present. But yes, he looks more comfortable when we play 4-4-2.

I thought Gravesend were playing 4-4-2 at Halifax, because there were four defenders, Ricketts on the right, James Smith and Paul McCarthy in the centre and Ross Smith on the left. I'm sure we didn't play 3-5-2 on Saturday like in previous games.

We play a 3-5-2 Kevin.

Macca and the Smiths at the back, midfield of Keeling, Quinn, De Bolla, Slatter and Ricketts, with Charlie and Luke up front.

The trouble with this is Keeling tends to bomb forward (nothing wrong with that) but is a little shy defending, while Ricketts likes to be more defensive minded (nothing wrong with that) but never gets forward.

We need Opinel back. Ross doesn't like playing at left back and it shows. He is doing a bloody good job though covering. Once we have Opinel we can have 4-4-2. Ricketts, R Smith, J Smith and Opinel at the back. We'll soon have Stacey Long so he can play right midfield with Quinn, De Bolla and Keeling with Chas and Skywalker up front.

I noticed 3-5-2 in the previous matches.

Was Ricketts in midfield? He seems to be down the defence line on the right at Halifax. Sorry if I got it wrong. Kenny thought it was 4-4-2 but I shuld know better!!(shh.) Maybe it was because in the first half and we were defending the ball towards the end of the half.

I thought it was Ross Smith (left back), James Smith, Paul McCarthy (centre back), Ricketts (right back), Slatts (right midfield), Rob Quinn and DeBolla (centre mid.), Keeling (right mid.), with Luke Moore and Charlie up front.

I'm probably wrong but they may have been switching formations during the match!!! (Let's Keep debating!!)lol

After tonight, I dont see how you can drop anyone involved - it would certainly be harsh as well as disruptive to do so.

CG said "Against Maclean, KIghtly and Slabber, you need pace at the back" - well, Slabber wasnt playing, which helped, but otherwise, we clearly had sufficient pace to cope, alongside McCarthy, who is slower but shows a wise experienced head to offset this.

I know Ross is better at Centre Half, but I still would prefer to leave things unchanged on SAturday.

All of the back four tonight (I think Ricketts was right-back) were brilliant, the two Smiths and MCarthy in particular. James Smith's tackle just before MacLean was flagged for offside was absolutely brilliant, McCarthy's reading of the game was second to none and Ross was an absolute rock.

McCarthy had a fine game... sadly there's still people who can't see past his lack of pace and recognise the other dimensions he adds to the team.

In fact, for all the talk about pace, I didn't see McClean or Boylan get past him much.
