After a promising start, Hornchurch went a goal down when Innocent ran clear, looking offside, and Baldwin’s tackle warranted a penalty, which ANTON INNOCENT scored from. Hornchurch had the better of the rest of the first half, Styles heading wide from Tomlinson’s centre, Thomas sending Parker away on the right and his cross just eluded Gasper in front of goal, and a Burbridge knock back to Steve Parmenter – yes, it is the ex-Canvey, Braintree, Stortford player – saw Steve’s hard drive rise just over the bar.

Stortford could have gone two up when Innocent was allowed too much room and he rounded Madden, but hit his shot high over the bar – shades of Bowers Utd – and a good upfield pass by Styles to Wightman saw an excellent cross but Burbridge’s final touch was lacking in pace. Shortly before half time ROY ESSENDOH headed home from a Phillips centre.

Second half started slowly and it was some time before either team threatened, and then a long ball out to the right found an unmarked DANNY PHILLIPS run through and drive the ball hard past Madden. The fourth goal was totally unexpected, as an upfield clearance was played straight back again by JASON MASON from near the half way line and Madden was caught way off his line. A minute later JOHN HEFFORD scored with a header which went over Young’s head, and then shots from Wightman and Tomlinson were well saved by the home keeper.

The lush playing surface was a credit to the home team, although the ball frequently slowed down when it bounced on the thick grass. The car park is now a wall to wall airport car park, with football parking being allowed only in the car park about a hundred yards away from the ground – anyone failing to notice the scrawled sign pointing towards the football car park is faced with a clamping release fee of £75. And anyone hopping onto the bus waiting outside the ground is immediately whisked away to the airport.

Well I've just arrived home from seeing a good game that although was lost, there were many plusses.

The Woodsiders were most hospitable and tks to Mick, John, Andy and Co. for that.

The Blues took their chances, the first , a vital pen from an offside run that was blatant.

I will also mention the one two off the Lino that even he was embarrassed about.

Flags in the air and no whistle, I could go on all night.

In the end a good workout.... end of really.

Big thanks to the fans that attended.

Max - Lino is an abbreviation for linesman.

As they are now called 'assistants' surely the correct term is 'asso' or some such.

But had it gone it, it would have been a most unusual goal.
