It's off

That wont do the clubs bank account much good either - Max 1500 probably for midweek game later in the season - potentially 1000 less than for today.

Mind you, at least it gives the players a couple of extra days off and will mean one or two that werent available today will hopefully be fit then eg Liam - from a playing point of view, postponement of the next home game until later in the season wouldnt be such a bad thing either !!

I can't believe it. Surely there was never enough rain last night to make the pitch waterlogged, especially following the relatively recent repair work on it and the way it has held up so well so far?

I don't think it's any coincidence that the three noon kick-offs we have had over last season and this one have all been called off (i.e. today's game, Aldershot at home on New Year's Day and Purfleet away last Boxing Day). Surely if all daytime games kick off at 3pm, it always gives the groundstaff more time to try and sort the pitch out. If the game has to be called off anyway, then that isn't a problem and so be it, but at least three extra hours would have given us a chance of seeing a game today, especially with the relatively mild weather and a fairly strong wind today.

Never mind - only two days to wait for the Dagenham match...

I hear what you are saying jc, but your rant is ruined by the by the fact that the Aldershot match was a 3pm kick-off and called off at 2pm.

I spoke to someone at the ground who told me that they were stilling pumping water off the pitch at 11am this morning, so it was unlikely that with more rain haven fallen since then that the match would have been playable at 3 today.

An idea.....seeing as everyone is sure what the crowd will be...why not have a competition to guess the attendance....and thus raise some money for the club...similar to the Golden Goal thing.....then all the experts can win money as well as supporting the club !

All I can say is that walking back towards The Hill & then down Dover Road ( having arrived at 11.05 for a beer !!), I saw loads of cars with Gravesend fans in, and also passed loads of people still walking to the ground ..so the crowd would have been good. I assume that the Margate fans were already on their way up before the game was called off ?

So.....why was it called off so late ? if due to overnight rain...then that rain would have been there earlier than 10.50 ?...and what of the drainage system ? wasn't that supposed to end all such debacles ?

Anyway, as previously mentioned, I needed the walk ( cheers !)...and got in the pub earlier than predicted ( and Sheff Wed won !)....so the day wasn't a complete washout !

Compliments of the season....

Cheers,

Alright, perhaps 2500 may have been over optimistic - but would you have said we'd have got over 2000 for Dagenham before that game ?

And the basis of the argument still stands - ie that the club will lose money on the game when it is finally played, especially if it is a Tuesday night - the difference in the gate may be smaller than I suggested, but even a 500 drop would mean £4000 less in the clubs coffers.

I have got to say the pitch was not good today. I was one of the people out there with my fork trying to get the match on, but to no avail. What is more worrying, I spoke to some Margate stewards and they said the pitch at Dover is a mud bath at the moment, if we have more rain they cant see our return match being played either.

If the kick off had been later today i have no doubt we would have played as we were winning the battle when the ref called it off.

Mind you he is OK he still gets half his fee plus expenses.

talking about the money lost, what happens to all of the programmes?will lose all that money or are they going to be reused when they are out of date for rearranged match?that must be quite alot of money we stand to lose?

I reckon there would have been close on 2,000 today......and, as you say, can't see there being that many when the game is played on a Tuesday evening...which is a bit of a shame....not to mention reduction in programme sales, bar takings etc....

They said there'd be snow at Christmas, they said there'd be peace on earth, but instead it just kept on raining.....................

Sorry, Dave, I forgot that the Aldershot match was supposed to kick off at 3pm. I still think that 3pm kick-offs are the most sensible for matches over the festive period, but it seems that there was simply too much rain on this occasion (for example, Ashford's home game today was also called off, apparently). If our pitch was indeed not going to be playable even by 3pm, I of course have no complaints.

Now that I've calmed down, I can look forward to getting my Christmas football fix in two days time... - bring on the Daggers!

Shame really but for those like me that had to work the rain was a godsend. Thats at least 2 and maybe 4 fans that will be available for the new date.

As for the crowd, the game may be of more importance later on. Tuesday night home games can be well attended. Remember Canvey.

The Daggers match was a tuesday night and that was the best crowd and atmosphere of the season.

Now that the matches are segregated what could be better than seeing the Margit fans standing at the Swanscombe end in the pouring rain on a cold Tuesday night....don't anyone tell them that we've got so many holes in the stand roofs that we are no better off than them.
