Defeat thanks to the linesman and ref

Recommended Posts

Edgware's winning run tonight came to an end in a 0-1 defeat at home to Harefield Utd. While I can take a defeat I cant take the injustice of the way we lost. Fair play to Harefield who look a good strong side, and bossed the midfield in the first half and went in a goal up thanks to a penalty, after a push in the box.

Second half Edgware looked a lot better on the ball, though still playing it too high, when if they had kept it on the floor they would have seen more joy.

Chances were created and the longer the game went on the more Edgware looked like getting a deserved draw.

A penalty was awarded to Edgware after a push in the box, and Lee Gardner stepped up to take it. He Had previoulsy scored twice from the spot so far this season, and he made no mistake again this time.....

In my joy of celebrating our goal, I did not see that the Harefield team had broke forward with all the Edgware players still celbrating the 'goal'. All hell pretty much broke loose and it appeard the goal had NOT been given, after the linesman had ruled that there was encrouchment in the area by one of the Edgware players.

I have never see this be given before, and at the end of the game no one was quite sure why the goal had not been given. Suffice to say this is a hard way to lose the first game of the season.

If anyone can find a rulebook and find out the acutal rules that state if a player enters the penalty area when a penalty is being taken and then the penalty is scored that it should not be given I would like to see it.

sounds dubious but I thught the following rule stood on encroachment.

if the goal is scored and it is one of the attacking team the kick should be retaken. If its missed then so be it. If the kick is not scored and its one of the defending team then its retaken, if its scored then it stands. Whatever it sounds like there should have been a retake in this case.

Law 14 taken from TheFA.com

A team-mate of the player taking the kick enters into the penalty area or moves in front of or within 9.15m (10yds) of the penalty mark:

the referee allows the kick to proceed

-if the ball enters the goal, the kick is retaken

-If the ball does not enter the goal, the referee stops play and restarts the match with an indirect free kick to the defending team.

-If the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper, the crossbar or the goal post and is touched by this player, the referee stops play and restarts the match with an indirect free kick to the defending team

This would seem to indicate that the penalty should have been retaken. You woz robbed!

As I thought, I have video evdience as I took a video of the penalty, which I then showed to all the players and managers, who took it to the referee to show him.

So.....what can Edgware do? anything? if this is the law then it seems that it was a GOAL, or at the very least should have been retaken. The game restarted with a free kick to Harefield while Edgware players were still celbrating.

If as Lato it was one of their players then it should have been retaken had we missed, but we did not, so it would have stood. The linesman says it was one of our players so it should have been retaken we were indeed robbed.

I heard that the assessor thought the referee had an excellent game. I did not ask Paul our club secreatary what he wrote down for the officails assesment but I know what I would have written down.

Can the club appeal? and if so what good would it do?

gav, wots edgwares pitch like these days?
....

The pitch is not only the best in the Spartan league but one of the best in the whole Middlesex county. Expect one of the Middlesex finals to be played at the WLG this season. The clubs we have played at home so far have all said how impressed they are with the pitch.
