Canvey Island 4 Fakenham Town 1

Top class win today for Canvey, with goals from Steve Corbell, Clyde Roberts, Nicky Rugg and George Blewer.

Hit the bar twice as well but with Steve Corbell and Clyde Roberts outstanding, it was a top class performance from the team, played in extremely difficult windy conditions.

Well done lads and here's to a good draw in the next round and a decent cup run after that.

Lots of positives from yesterday's game and good to see Canvey back on their winning ways again.

Such a comprehensive victory (the score of which certainly never flattered us either, as it could easily have been 6 or 7) can only give the lads confidence and hopefully put the dreadful performance and result against Tilbury well behind them.

Extremely hard to play good football in such swirling winds but the 2nd half performance was top class and here's looking forward to AFC Sudbury next week now and hopefully another good result.

Good positive result against Fakenham - wind certainly made it difficult and we definitely adapted better.

We created numerous chances and hit the woodwork twice. The lads should have got a real positive from the game. Good to see Corbell back as I felt we missed him once he went off against Arlesley with an injury. Clyde is also consistently putting in some good performances.

I do, however, have concerns with the way we defend. There goal was very simlar to one at Arlesley and one from Tilbury where we were caught very flat footed - no offside flag - and virtually a one on one with Ricky. I'd say that was unlucky but in the second half again I saw our central defender being drawn wide whilst they had a man completely unmarked (number 12 I think) who had made a good run to the far side of the area. Fortunately the ball never got across.

I'm not sure where it's going wrong but there needs to be a bit more "communication" between our defenders as it's leaving us exposed and with games against Sudbury and Hornchurch coming up it's certainly something that needs to be worked on as they will punish us where Fakenham couldn't.

Yeah, well done on Saturday and thanks for leading Tilbury into a false sense of security last Monday! And it worked..another well-deserved Grand for both us....

This was my first game of the season, having just got back from holiday. How I enjoyed my first experience of the NEW Canvey Island FC. I thought the enthusiasm on the field was terrific, the atmosphere on the terrace was vibrant and the general ‘feel’ of the place was based on optimism and openness. The crowd was bigger than I expected and I hope that more people will come back, once word gets out that this is an optimistic set-up at Park Lane. Only one person I spoke to was downbeat, feeling that his life had gone back 10 years and that we had been here once before and didn’t quite have the buzz to want to do it all over again. I understand that point of view, even though I don’t agree with it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the football, even though it was strange for me not to know any of the players’ names. Where was Wardy? Why wasn’t Danny Potter in goal? But soon I was drawn into the game and, I suppose being lucky that my first game was a thumping win, I enjoyed every minute of it. Every one of the players I saw seemed to be giving it 100% and as a result there was no barracking from the terraces, only genuine support.

I enjoyed Craig Davidson’s performance (he was always a favourite of mine) and I thought that he and Dobbo put some meat on the rather thin and inexperienced bones. Another player of similar calibre to these two and I believe we could do really well.

The past has passed and I feel honoured that I played a tiny, tiny part in the 10 glory years. Without serious financial backing I don’t suppose history will repeat itself, but who knows??? In the meantime I will be back because I liked what I saw and for the first time in a long time, I sensed some ‘ownership’ in my club.

Can’t wait for the next game.
