After a tentative start Urchins took the lead in the second minute when DAVE SADLER cut in from the left and drove the ball hard and low into the net. Essendoh created an opening a minute later for Simpson whose shot was too high and over the bar, and Moules went close shortly afterwards. Urchins went further ahead when GARETH THOMAS headed home from Wareham’s corner, and Burbridge went close with a hard volley. Stortford looked powerful in attack with Essendoh prominent, although Urchins had the better of the first half, with Thomas and Sadler both going close.

Holland nearly floated in an excellent swerving shot from outside the penalty area soon after the interval, and then Holland headed back a cross from Sadler to JOHN WIGHTMAN, who scored with a first time shot from the edge of the area Stortford had an opportunity to get back into the game with a penalty, but Lockett hit his shot too high and the ball went over the bar, heading in the general direction of the river Ingrebourne. By now, such was the pace of the match, that Max had almost lost his voice and was reduced to a hoarse whisper.

The fourth goal came when Holland played the ball back to JOHN WIGHTMAN who again rocketed his shot into the net, and then Clark’s low cross into the middle was flicked home by AINSLEY CASPER, who had ghosted in behind his marker. Casper created the final goal of the night with an excellent centre for BILLY HOLLAND to finish off. An exceptional performance all round, the only downside being an injury to Tony Vincent, which left him limping badly.

>>>do you know why the riverside is so called

Yes, it's because the river Ingreboure was diverted over to that side when the ground was first used - previously it used to run right through the middle of where the ground now is - to be precise, about thirty yards from what is now the Riverside touchline - the west (ie the side now called the Riverside) was in the district of Hornchurch, whilst he land to the east (ie the Upminster side) was in the district of Upminster - the entire ground now of course falls within Upminster - if you look at an OS map, you will find that the river flows south towards the main road side of the ground, and then takes a westwards diversion around the ground, before resuming it southward flow - this was an artificial meander around the ground, made in the early 50s.

The heron by the way commutes between the area of the Ingrebourne behind the goal up to the heronry in Kent.

thanks for that.

so, when the penalty headed "over the bar in the general direction of the ingrebourne.." you were of course referring to the original route of the river ingrebourne. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />

No - the Ingrebourne flows south in a more or less direct line towards the far goal, then diverts west and goes around the Riverside, before coming back to its original course about 200 yards south of the clubhouse.

What I meant was that the ball was heading towards the river where is goes under the bridge on the main road just east of the railway station.

If you download 'google earth' and then enter 'hornchurch, uk' and follow this to the ground, you can very clearly see how the river has been diverted.
