Refs in this league

Recommended Posts

It is common knowledge that Referee's from our league are highly regarded friendly individuals and the SSML Referee's Secretaries, namely Mr Harrison and Mr Ewen do an incredible job in co-ordinating and organising the difficult operation for what is a hugely thankless task.

Are we still talking about the Ref's?

Going to be a bad weekend I fear Spidermanor, I've a feeling that you are going to pick up your first win of the season, while we ALWAYS lose at Preston.

To try and make this post SSML related then our match against Ipswich saw the linesman rule out a perfectly good goal with a technical error. I don't think that we will be trying to get the game replayed though it would be nice to think that the lino would re-read the offside law, and maybe have his b######s whipped as well (no not bitter at all )

He can have the lino from our game at Spurs to keep him company, oh and the ref who gave a penalty against us for handball when it hit Powells head, or the ref who gave a penalty against us in the 5th minute of three minutes of stoppage time!!!!!

But hey at least I'm not bitter.

Just a thought for you all...

As with the clubs in any league, the referee's in every league also hope to be the best referee in the league. If the referee gets the best average club mark (for those that dont know, after the games the clubs will mark the ref out of 100) for the whole season then he (or she) will get promoted.

The point is that your ref's do their best in all games. Whether their best is good enough??? That is up for opinion!!!

Do they get relegated for poor marks? If not it would be a tactic to mark them up to get them away from you!!

That used to happen NF !

The FA want 50% of the Step 5 games covered by assessors so that they get away from club marks being the main criteria.

Assessors are the only way of getting a fair assessment of a ref - club marking is a complete lottery.

some of the time. Some clubs have decent secretaries who mark objectively. But then their are the others who watch a ref have a blinder for 90 minutes, get a penalty spot on in the last minute and knock 20 marks off cos it was against their team. I know some of them and I am sure there are a few hanging around on the SSML.

Sounds reasonable to me

As long as they add say 10 marks for a last minute penalty awarded to them.

"ref, blinder, 90 minutes" interesting concept. Wish I could say that about our players!!

All of the above is one of the main reasons why there is so much inconsistency from refs!!! Not saying refs cheat, but do you not think this sort of thing goes through a refs mind on that last minute penalty decision, or that red card??? Particuarly if he thinks he is having a good season!

Answers to above...

- Yes you can get demoted for poor marks

- As I understand it assessments are supposed to be 50% this season but do not carry any weight (at present) when it comes to promotions??? (Blame the FA for that one)

As for the best ref? How am I meant to know that??? There are about 40 of them!!!

I have heard a rumour that club marks are being done away with next season and only assessor's marks will count towards promotion (although the FA may keep the club marking system to keep the clubs happy but not take any notice of the marks they give!).

As for good refs in the SSML, a few of the better ones have been promoted since PBT left the League. There are two very good refs I can think of. One is Lee Forrester and the other, who I think is still on the League, is John Scott. There are doubtless other good refs in the SSML but these two have always stood out as slightly better for me. There may be some upcoming refs I haven't seen on the League but I can only go by the ones I remember.

I think that is the intention PBT and to be honest I think that is the best way. For this season I understand it is a mixture of the 2. I think clubs will be glad to be free from marking refs as long as they are still able to express their opinion to the relevant leagues by letter.

Has anybody encountered a Referee called Steven Conway from Edgware in their travels, no relation to Russ Conway, or at least I don't think so.
