In terms of recent history we are the biggest club at this level but that doesn't give us the God given right to expect us to walk this division.

Weymouth and Aldershot spent years trying to get out of their leagues. Both could quite easily play at Football League level with the support they get.

According to our program yesterday, the Weymouth chairman (I think) has threatened to quit if attendances down there don't go up. Accy have had a similar problem since going into the football league and you could even say we did, upon promotion to the Conference. Does make me wonder what the point of finally getting into these big leagues is, if nobody is going to turn up.

good point, yesterday was a massive wake-up. We are a better footballing side than Tilbury but they done their jobs and ground out a result. They're an organised and tough side to break down.

To say i'm disappointed with a couple of our players is an understatement. There was over 500 of us that turned up and the least i expect is for everyone to give 110%, even if they're not having the best of games.

here's my thoughts on each player.

Wiseman - Distribution was terrible. Has got to sort this out because as a team it starts from the keeper. 6

Blewer - Looked nervous and took too long doing things. Could of put more effort in. 6

West - Yet again, trying to be too clever. Done some things well and others shockingly poor. 5

Wall - Had a shocker. Missed headers, out of position too many times but didnt give up. 6

Davidson - One of only a couple to come out with any credit. 7

Bourne - Too many mistakes and wrong choices. Tryed hard but ran down dead ends. Could of got stuck in more. 6

Gordon - didnt even know he was playing. didnt look interested and didnt work hard 5

Dobinson - Along with Clyde, looked confortable in the middle and battled hard 7

Clyde - Worked tirelessly again even when things didnt go his way 7

Rugg - Quiet game but worked hard as he usually does 7

Curran - Looked a bit off the pace and could have offered more 6

Without meaning to sound biased, I don't think Bourney did a hell of a lot wrong yesterday. Not going forward, at least - he took on the Tilbury defenders constantly and put in some good crosses. A few went a stray and he was barged off the ball a couple of times, but he did try. His defending may have been lacking though.

Absolutely right there Ribbit. How many other clubs in this league have won the FA Trophy and spent two seasons in the Conference?

Err Enfield?? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

In the last 30 years maybe. Not in the last 10 though.

Enfield Town are a club that are only 5 years or so old and were formed because the old Enfield (of whom you obviously refer) had trouble with their owner and consequently lost their ground.

Whilst your point is probably valid in terms of long term history, ie the late 70's and 1980's, Canvey's success came a relatively short time ago and they are without a doubt the club presently at this level to have attained success (as a part time club) at the highest level of non league football.

Do you really think that after losing a team of Conference standard players that Canvey fans are not aware of the way things are at the moment? This is a season to consolidate and I don't think anybody really thought that CIFC would come into this league and win it without breaking sweat as some other fans of other clubs seem to insinuate.

It is a big learning curve for players who were playing reserve football last year and it is not going to be achieved overnight.

The club had to be put on a sound footing off the field for it's survival and that has been achieved by the magnificent efforts of the supporters and those officials behind the scenes.

After all the club has been through, a top half/top ten finish would be more than acceptable to me in our 1st season in Ryman Nth 1.

No supporter of Canvey has been under any illusion as to how hard this season would be and although a couple of games have been lost so far, it is hardly the end of the world is it? Hopefully the players and management will have learned from those defeats and with experience being gained from every match played by what is extensively a very young side, push on from here and start to move up the table.

You're right. If we still had last season's team, we could expect to walk this division without breaking into sweat, but without any of those players and a team largely made up of last season very successful reserve squad, we've got to be more patient. No-one expected us to lose to Tilbury, but it's happened and now we have to pick up the pieces and make sure it doesn't happen again when we go to their place.

Our next four games are going to be extremely tough and if we don't learn to adapt soon enough we could well see ourselves go out of two cup competitions already.

Fakenham will come at us with everything they've got as they know they have nothing to lose.

AFC Sudbury are currently top of the league being one of the two teams that have so far gained maximum points.

The other being AFC Hornchurch, who even if they decide to play with a depleted team are gonna run us ragged for the League Cup.

Should we beat Fakenham we will have another game on the 16th, but failing that we host Maldon who, if I remember rightly were relegated into this league from the Ryman Premier and are looking to bounce straight back.

agree but think bourne also played well-'ish'

when we put the ball down on the ground we played good and tilbury could not cope, but as soon as we put the ball in the air........

No offence Ken but i diagree. Players set there standards the first game of the season. They have to hit them every time they play. Fair enough if your having a bad game but to be part of a team is to bust a gut and work hard for your team mates and everyone who pays to watch. Fair point, Dobbo and a few others had a bad game but i didnt once see him give up, shirk a challenge or stop running. A pity the same cant be said for a couple of the others.

Tilbury adapted to our method of attack yesterday.

Whereas in the first half Leon and Bourne were managed to constantly get to the byeline, the second half they couldn't. Unfortunately not many of their crosses found their target or were blocked. Our best crosser of the ball yesterday was Crow.

Second half we tried to do the same but Tilbury shut us down much quicker. Leon and Bourne could only break so far into their half and with no overlapping player to draw their man out wider we were shut out and had to revert to either a poor deep cross, a poor long ball or play it across the field on the halfway line.

We appeared to be very reluctant to run with the ball. Many of the players appeared to be content to move away from a pass and let the ball come to them, rather than go to the ball and do something with it.

Like Jay Curran said yesterday, the Referee was giving us nothing in the second half despite numerous attempts to decapitate Nicky Rugg and especially the Tilbury player who attempted to sink Chris Bourne into the pitch.

Without having Ryan I don't think it would hurt to have our Midfield play a bit more defensive in the middle and if Lee Jay and/or Steve Corbell are fit for Saturday play them on the wing and have Leon sit just behind Nicky or Jay.

Kind of like this, (assuming people are fit):

--------------- Johnson ----------------

- Blewer -- Kreyling -- West -- Davidson -

---------- Batch ------ Dobinson --------

- Roberts ------------------ Jay/Corbell -

---------- Gordon ----------------------

------------------ Rugg/Curran ---------

Corbell

Edgar

Kreyling

Jay

Take those players out of any team at this level and you are going to limit your options.

We are the biggest team in this league, we are however going through a period of transition.

Enfield Town & AFC Whatever do not count, as they are new clubs!!!

How can they try to claim the old clubs history, if they do they should have claimed their liabilities as well, as that would have an efffect on current situation.

You cannot start Phoenix companies under a name of convenience and claim their history!

I seem to remember quotes from their directors at the time (I am sure we can dig them out from the archive) "the new club has no link to the old your honour honest".

Unless we are the biggest team in ESL!!!

Seriously this year must be about consolidation and learning, I am not sure even if we got there, we would be be ready for Ryman Premier!!

I would be content with top half of mid table!!
