U18's

I went to watch the U 18's play Sheppey yesterday.

In all i enjoyed the game and can see some promise in a few of the youngsters. The keeper had a great game and was unlucky to have conceded from a 1st half penalty . The origins of the offence remains a mystery to the odd spectator and both teams in fact all except the ref.

Sheppey played the better football, it was obviouse they had been together a while.

Thought the gate had a share of the ball most attacks broke down before they got to the box, mostly wayward passing.

Second half saw Gate come more into the game, putting pressure on sheppy's goal, though Sheppey were more than a handful to Gates somewhat static defence(lacks pace as with first team).

The Gate went further behind to a drive which would grace any game in any league in the world. Sheppey broke down the right, from about 10 yards out side the box the Sheppey boy let it fly it looked as though it would go over the bar but dipped into the top left hand corner. The Gate keeper made a valiant effort to get to it but as i said it was a class goal.

Gate came into the game more and started to string passes together they got a goal back and should have gone netted a couple more when one was blasted over the bar from 10 yards with the keeper no where and, the same player missed a one on one with the keeper stranded on the ground, playing the ball into his body.

All in all the gate considering there lack of time together are not bad, definitely an improvement on last year.

I must take a pen and paper to future games.

Yep Blueblood I was there too. I am in complete agreement to the above. Never had a clue as to why the penalty was awarded and the keeper looked good. Quicker distribution of the ball would be my only possible quibble.

Plus I heard on the grapevine whilst there, on Sunday, that the best 17 year old in the district is about to sign for Margate.

I too watch this game, have to say I watched a slightly different one though, but agree 100% about the penalty.

I thought the back line did ok, one player in particular saved Margate’s day several times and he was quick. The second half was better (after a sub came on) as Margate used the width for 20 minutes and were the better side. Too many kicks down the middle from the keeper, who had a good game, did not help as the mid-field struggled (no height). Another change in the last 15 gave Margate a lift, a hurried lob just over the net from this player and a run from wide beating defender, the shot was only half stopped by keeper. The ball at half speed ran with-in 300mm of the line only to be cleared by desperate defence. Had the striker not slowed to avoid the keeper he might have got a tap-in.

On the whole 1-1 would have been fair. There is promise here, the side will come together over the weeks and put some good performances in to get results. For only their second game they did well.

Under 18s v Sittingbourne and hello to some old friends. For some reason it was an early start, meet at 8, who came up with that one.

Anyway the game, a new line up, some in some out. Sittingbourne were almost to a man at least a head taller than Margate, with the wind blowing it could mean just one thing, yawn, ball over the top. We kicked off, four passes later the striker who came on in the last 15 last week tested the keeper. This was a far better game and although Sittingbourne often played the better football Margate were more determined and tried to keep the ball on the ground. Extra width this week proved to work as the left wing ran his socks off. The half settled into attack and counter, neither keeper really tested. There were a few moment of bad temper but over all contending with the strong wide was the hardest bit. Then with 5 left in the half a free kick was sent in by Margate, Sittingbourne should have dealt with it but a run from last weeks saving defender went through a forest of swaying defenders to head home, can I say JTish ust as good. Let’s settle, no, ok. A couple of passes and as many seconds the ball was sent in from wide, Margate back peddling defence caught, a free header saw 1-1 at half time.

Second half and it was the same again although tempers got a little out of hand. Margate dealt well with the equalizing goal, their heads stayed up and played the better football. A forced change up front gave fresh legs and Margate pressed. Around 25 min number ten challenged hard on the left, the ball ran on, beating his marker again got the cross away (was it over the line) as the replacement striker came in only to over run, but a quick turn got his shot away as a defender came in, nicely taken 1-2. Sadly here we saw a Sitiingbourne player set off as there was some verbal’s regarding the ball crossing the by-line. However, Sittingbourne were now the better side and it was only some good keeping and defence that kept Margate ahead. Another Gate change gave more fresh legs as the game evened. Then with 5 to go the number ten received the ball on the left, quick feet beat his marker, struck a good ball which curled into the net passed a diving keeper, a good effort and game over. The sub stricker was put through again but had too much time only the keeper to beat shot wide. In the end Sittingbournes extra height was dealt with although we gave away far too many free kicks which as we know from Sheppey can be costly. A good team performance and team spirit. This could be the making of a good side, the next few games will tell. Dover Ath. visit the Gate next week.

I saw the game and agree with you,I think only the ref knew as the other side stood looking as it was a Margate free kick. The goalkeeper had an excellent game, need to use width but I think if the full backs came wide or the strikers came off there markers would of given him someone to play it to.Overall they should of at least got a point as the striker came on and missed 2 sitters,I couldn't believe he stopped when it went passed the keeper he was to one side and only the defender moved.Shame but it will come.I spoke to a dad who went to the siitingbourne game and it was a very good team performance,it doesn't matter who scores the goals it's the win that counts. Was told the keeper all the way to the strikers worked hard.I think the people running it are doing an excellent job and the results will come.

Margate v Dover Ath. Some things are taken for granted but in this case even a few Dover players and officials acknowledged how good the pitched looked. It was a credit to the grounds staff and at 10.30 looked and probably is the best pitch in this half of Kent. Dover has always provided a good match through the age group I have followed and the expectation was of a fairly even game and a sounding board to Margate’s under 18s.

I note I’ve been asked to give a few names, glad to, but I am not yet familiar with every player and as they seem to swap shirts each week it` not easy. However, one or two have proved their worth from the first game and should get a mention. Number 7 Paul out wide is none stop, plays a good game and scores, Andy at the back is also a huge plus. Today’s number 10 (Chris?) scored a couple of good goals and should get a mention in the 5 – 1 win. Now, after the game, it is difficult to judge. Were Margate as good as they looked and the score line suggests, or are Dover not MUSH class. Perhaps to hot for football Margate took the game on from the first and it was clear that they meant to win. Continuous pressure down the right and left, something which was lacking previously gave Margate many opportunities. Keeper Matt had little to do but did pull off one fine smother in the second half in a one on 1. Three goals, one an own goal which came from a great left wing combination put Margate in the comfort zone. Second half and Margate began slowly, the heat telling after 10 minutes should have seen changes. This was missed and Dover started to mount a challenge, coming forward they made a few half chances. A Margate booking early on did not help as a good cross saw Margate panic. Dover kept going and finally were rewarded with a solo run going passed 2 defenders and shot gave some hope, 3-1. A couple of minutes later saw a change and Margate rallied to get the ball wide left for 4-1, sorry not sure who scored. Two more changes and Margate were coasting again but Dover came again which saw Matt smother the ball and almost Dover’s last effort. Number 12 (Jim?) played wide and put a solo effort away making 5-1. A late Dover corner gave a, was it in situation, the ref sided with the home team and it was play-on and the final whisle.

Minuses should and could have been a clean sheet, plusses, team work with some flair, midfield did the work, defence were solid and the forwards scored and, Margate used the width. Without getting too carried away Margate are becoming contenders and suddenly they`re in 4th spot. Watch out south side. Keep it going lads.

Great result and against Dover which makes it sweeter. Well done to the management and players. Keep up the good work and you might get some crowds up there and tempt me to get up early on a Sunday <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

FA Youth Cup 1st qualifying round at home to either Horsham YMCA or East Grinstead. Tbc game to be played week commencing 25th September.

Good and true report. again i was very impressed by the standard of FOOTBALL (not hoof and run). the U18'S style is a clone of the one touch passing game we have seen from the reserves and 1st team (up till saterday). This is how it should be. I spoke to MW on saterday about a team sheet, he said they would be putting a team sheet and report from both games into the office Monday to be posted on the web.

I have to say, unlike the guys who went all the way to Borehamwood, I thoroughly enjoyed the game on display at Hartsdown on saterday afternoon. If David Cory had taken his chances he would have had a hat full.

The young no7 impressed, he skinned the guy on the right wing mercilessly, it was just his final touch which let him down. Though his touch improved as his confidence grew.

MOM. Williams at the back, won every thing in the air.

It was ditto for Sunday, thoroughly enjoyable. I must say i was expecting more from Dover after hearing about their youth system etc, over the years. My only criticism was the tendency of the centre backs to hoof it up and out, this also got better as the game went on. M-O-M, difficult so many played well.

Yes i have to say i thoroughly enjoyed my weekend of football.

The number 7 on the right for the reserves might have been Stellon. Have heard good things about him. Only 18 and plenty of pace. He came on at Chatham in preseason and looked useful. Look forward to reading the report on the website.

Think Williams has the tools to be a good player. It would help him if he got a bit bulkier as its very physical in the Ryman.

Hi all,

have been reading several threads on site, especially the res and youth. I`d like to let it known (rightly or not) that since my son joined Margate this July to play in the U18s I have seen nothing but a professional approach to players and training. I was given some insider info from someone who knows both Rams and The Gates set up; they told me that Margate was the best way to go. My son who had played for Rams for the past 3 years in the MUSH wanted to stay, being what he knew. He was the top goal scorer for two of those three years and over all top goal scorer. Not once was he thanked by anyone say the manager. On the u16 presentation night the team were made to feel second class with a few pointed remarks which were nasty were made. The teams failings were Ramsgates failings not the players. Although I did my bit for the team week in week out no one spoke to me and, at the bar backs were turned on me. I left early as my blood was beginning to boil and I swore they would not get another penny out of me. My son along with others of the old team turned up for trials for U18 most were ignored; no one had the decency to even say no thank you. Margate has proved to be a refreshing new start for my son and although he may not get much further in football I know he will be given the chance to try. Thanks to Tom, Phil and all.

Watched two first team games this week, came away disappointed on 2 fronts. 1)the result and 2)the performance. Todays under 18s away to Faversham in the PLAAYA Cup thankfully only had the latter. Seemed that it was a case of turning up and we`ve won, Fav having suffered huge defeats.

With key players missing from Margates ranks the game proved to be quite even, neither side making much head way except for one early Margate effort. After 25 mins of toing and froing Margate took advantage of some poor defending which put Shane through to score. Ten minutes later the same with keeper also in error for Chris to make it 2 nil. Sorry to say that`s the way it stayed until the ref had a brainstorm and awarded Fav a penalty in the second half when one of their players fell over a downed Mrgate defender, even Fav supporters said on foul. So at 1 - 2 Fav pushed Margate making them clear from the goal mouth on two occasions. It`s always a plus to play poorly and still win, in this case it`s on to the next round and away to Erith and Belvedere on 15th Oct. Next game, home to Canterbury on Sunday and an FA Youth Cup on Monday 25th v East Grinstead at Hartsdown. Bit more support for the team would be nice.
