Here's my pennies worth......

 

Nice ground, good pitch and a reasonable side. I didn't expect Arlesey to be a push over and must admit I was a bit suprised by the final score.

 

Canvey started well with a lot of determination and commitment and this seemed to continue throughout the game - I didn't feel that our heads dropped but we eventually just ran out of idea's on how to break down their defence.

 

The game got off to a bad start when we conceeded an early goal and things didn't get better when Corbell went of injured. We seemed to lose the width on that wing although I felt Clyde Roberts played well today.

 

I felt we were undone more by an organised Arlesey team than by our own performance. They always had players behind the ball defending. To be honest their defence played a great game and shut us down - I think their man of the match was their number 2 a central defender. I also rated their number 5 Steven Dogbe who matched Rugg in the second half and kept him to a handful of shots at goal from a wide angle. They always had at least four or five players behind the ball and we just didn't know how to break them down. In fact I don't recall testing their keeper once during the first half. We had numerous corners but again they defended them well. In the end we just ran out of ideas.

 

Arlesey tended to break at speed which caught us cold a few times and left them with a handful of real opportunities. Fortunately it fell for them today and they took these chances well.

 

I still felt there were a number of positives from today; there were a couple of good individual performances today, the lads kept battling till the end and their heads didn't appear to drop.

 

I'm sure the lads will bounce back and with Tilbury at the Lane on Monday I'm expecting a far better result.
