Conference television deal

Recommended Posts

Already been posted on ConfGuide, but doesn't appear to have been posted here.

I guess we're guaranteed at least one or two televised fixtures now. Maybe with their Premiership deal starting the same season, people will start switch over from Sky. Or perhaps not and it'll be a massive financial disaster. Who knows..

Conference big TV deal

CONFERENCE clubs have struck a multi-million pound television deal that will guarantee live broadcasts for the next five years.

Almost 80 games a season will be shown live from the start of the 2007/08 campaign under the agreement signed with Irish company Setanta.

The deal was signed last night at the Pirelli Stadium after a meeting involving Conference board members — including Albion chairman Ben Robinson — and Setanta executives.

Setanta Sports will broadcast Nationwide Conference matches, play-offs, and the Conference Cup competition, which will be renamed the Setanta Sports Cup.

Football fans can look forward to Thursdays on Setanta Sports becoming regular Conference match nights — with a second game over the following four days.

Setanta Sport’s Director of Sport Trevor East said: "This is a great deal for Setanta and the Conference.

"There is huge interest in Conference football in towns and cities throughout England — and this deal will play an important part in Setanta’s growth and recognition in the country.

"We will cover at least 79 games, providing excellent exposure for the Conference and its member clubs."

Robinson described the deal as "fantastic for the Conference and its member clubs."

Conference chairman Bill King said: "Nationwide Conference clubs are looking forward to five years of television profiling thanks to this deal with Setanta Sports."

Just on the simple basis that they are showing 80 games a season, I would just presume that at least one, maybe two would involve us.

I may be wrong, but I thought Sky Sports showed considerably less than 80 games last season. Maybe half that at the most. Just personally, I would be surprised if not even one of those 80 games didn't involve us in some way.

It is afterall, a new channel, so they may be a tad more balanced with their broadcasting policies...

Where does the 'we are guaranteed at least one or two televised fixtures' come from?
They will show Oxford, Exeter, York, Cambridge maybe even Burton because of Clough, they won't show FGR, Tamworth, Southport, St Albans or Alty and they certainly won't show Gravesend and Northfleet.

Ah but if it's say Oxford, Exeter etc.. v Gravesend then they may show them, and Gravesend will be on the telly =]

If I didn't have to pay the BBC for the "privilege" of having a television, then I maybe able to afford to subscribe to Setanta !

Cheers,

Why would Woking get extra attention, their contact is at Sky, hardly likely to infuence Setanta.

As the Woking link to Sky is allegedly Martin Tyler, does this not give them an unfair financial advantage over other Conference clubs, which if not illegal, is certainly open to suspicion of being unfair.

As I don't watch Sky, do Woking actually get a larger share of TV, much as Arsenal and Spurs did on "The Big Match" with Brian Moore in the 1970's?

Sky show 88 Live Premiership games a season plus 50 on Prem Plus.

Llamas are bigger than frogs !!

Not sure why you are telling me about Sky coverage ( unless I have missed something ?). My point is that I choose to pay for Sky. I do not choose to pay for BBC, although I have to to own a TV !! B*stards !

Cheers,

If Gravesend's matches will be shown on telly, won't the attendancs go down more??

Nope, there are plenty of morons who will go because there is a chance they might be on the telly. Any football fan would rather be at the game rather than watching the telly.
For away games of course there is a chance that some people might watch the game on the telly rather than travel but we don't take huge numbers to away matches anyway. Hats off to those who do make the away games. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />

Even if no Gravesend matches are shown live, they are having a highlights programme every Thursday night anyway...showing all the goals from every game, including all Conference North & South matches as well !

I understand this is replacing the www.conferencefootball.tv deal.

The difference is that Setanta will be sending their own cameramen to every match instead of using club cameramen's footage.
