Enfield and Enfield Town

There is also this,

"Enfield, Dom. Enefelde (probably from the Anglo Saxon én and feld, a forest clearing) is about 9 miles from London by road."

As the name is derived from Anglo Saxon I should have thought that it was in the original kingdom of the East Saxons. There were also West Saxons of which the most famous was probably Alfred the Great. The middle Saxons were clearly dominated by the East Saxons and, apparently, Middle Saexe was considered to be a sub kingdom of the East Saxons.

"THE MIDDEL SEAXE (MIDDLE SAXONS / MIDDLESEX)

The Middle Saxons settled in the Thames basin either side of Roman Londinium. The city itself was abandoned for a century or so while the Saxons set up villages in the countryside. The Saxons south of the Thames became known as the Suth-rig, or "southern region" of the Middle Saxons.

By AD 704, the region (which included modern Hertfordshire) was mentioned in a charter as Middelseaxan, by 1086 Midelsexe (in Domesday Book).

c.600

The region comes under the dominance of the East Seaxe, who seem to treat it as a sub-kingdom.

c.730

The region comes under the dominance of Mercia, and the Middle Saxons now lose any individual identity they may have held onto."

Be very very careful of "researching" history via the internet. Not all the above rings true. For example, at Domesday, Enfield was in the Hundred of Edmonton, in the county of Middlesex. There is no record of a "Saxon" kingdom of Middlesex, which at various times was part of Mercia, Wessex and Essex.

I would like to make it very clear that I do not own an anorak. I do have a couple of waterproof jackets and a pair of waterproof trousers though, and several different sorts of boots. I am a bit lacking in headgear although the waterproofs do have hoods. They don't go over a hard hat though.

As for Steph and his aquatic ventures, well, our next away game is at Tilbury...
