Are we getting carried away ?

I'm playing devil's advocate a bit to provoke debate, albeit with a serious tinge.

After the relative misery of the last 3 seasons,it's no wonder we left Worthing in euphoria.

The team rightly deserve praise, and much as i am sure MF and RT will do their utmost to keep them level headed , when you get that amount of praise, inevitably you start to believe some of the publicity-maybe thats good to give confidence, maybe it can cause complacency ,no matter how much everyone try's to keep their feet on the ground.

Saturdy was a great day, but were we really that good.

Similar to Fisher game where we could have been 3-0 down after 30 mins. ,we could have been 2-0 down after 7 mins at Worthing.

A few have mildly criticised the second half display-me included-not that i was expecting another 2-3 goals-but i was hoping we would have kept control of the game a bit better. Those two goals could count against us on goal diference at end of season.

Should we really have been second best by that much in the second half-not imo.

The wind was quite strong, but we will play games when it is twice as strong as that, and it is slightly concerning (for both teams) that it had that big an impact.

I'm really hoping that the key leaders in MF and RT; plus the on pitch warriors in the likes of LP,SM and GO go into Tuesday's game expecting a real battle, as you very rarely get two games in a similar vein, and i think Tuesday will be a terrier like battle for the 'Gate with ETU doing everything they can to frustrate, waste time, niggle and close the 'Gate down.

The team will need to work a bit harder saturday to get the win imo.

A very good post Michael & its a post that sums up Saturday.Spot on especially your last few paragraphs.I for one am not getting carried away but that first 30 minutes you have to admit was "awesome". Lets hope tomorrow night we get a similar performance for a longer period. We really should have done better than we did in that second half I agree. That first 30 minutes we were playing like champions without a doubt but the second half we were relegation material I thought. Some occasional slick moves in the second half but overall poor. Worthing were i.m.o made to look better than they actually are.It wasnt a case of them coming at us, more the fact that we stopped playing the way we were doing. That showed them up as a better side than they actually are. Something our club has done on numerous occasions in the past with other teams. This year we mustnt go that same way.I also agree that tomorrows game is not going to be any walk over (am not saying that that has been intimated).Every game will be hard but we have the players here now and as a unit we should be able to dominate more than we have done in the past.Concentration is the main thing that let us down in that second half.No-one can praise that half hour more than I will but the rest was slightly embarrassing I thought. However nothing will take away the overall result as being a great result despite the negatives.

Just to add that unlike yourself the "moaning" at each other was just too much by too many different players for my liking & we were 5 nil up. Sorry but it dosent inspire me to hear that by so many different players in one game. You really would have thought we were LOSING by hearing it.Its not healthy & gives out vibes to the opposing team that we have some problems somewhere.I have no problem with encouragement but some of what I heard & witnessed went beyond that.No more of that to that extreme please, it was ugly to listen too & I dont think it helped our cause.

Christs sake we are just talking about certain things from the game that we felt werent quite right, in our opinions. We ARE happy about the result of course we are, over the moon in fact but why shouldnt we not analyse things if we want to..A great result,I have said it a thousand times since Saturday. But can we not discuss things that werent so clever on the day. Can you honestly say it was perfect for 90 minutes.I doubt you can.By discussing things like this does no-one harm on here & cannot improve things either but if the players discuss the same/similar details then only good can come of it & improve things, because believe it or not there is still a lot of improvement to be had.

As for the ENJOYMENT of the result on saturday I can assure you I have been enjoying it every second since the final whistle.Am still enjoying it now.Can we not discuss the negatives that were there,as well as the positives, while at the same time "enjoying" the moment of victory.

As Cookie says, this is forum to discuss.

I fully appreciate that you never get perfection, and certainly at Ryman part time status, errors will inevitably happen, but the number of chances that Worthing had-even in the first half-was a bit scary.

Don't forget, that whilst Pinnock was my m.o.m-in most peoples opinion our mom was SCS.

It must give a small message when you win 5-2 and your goalie is mom !!!

Of course we enjoyed it-it was sexy football-but i want sex more than once a season.

We have had a few 2-0 wins where we have dominated the game more.

I think Cookie was right insofar as the concentration went a bit awol; mental concentration is also related to phsysical fitness, and it was early season so i'm sure that will come.

There again,if we win 5-2 again tonight; i will admit i am entirely wrong and remain on my current high.

One swallow does not make a summer. We must wait and see what the next few games hold. I thought that Worthing were quite a good side and on another day could have beaten us. We will almost certainly play better and lose at some stage in the season.

Incidentally, I think that both Worthing goals were scored after RT went off. A bit worrying, particularly if he is in doubt tonight.

I was speaking in the general, mm, not the particular, so don't be naughty!

I was just trying to lighten the mood up a bit.

Actually, when you look at it, we did not do so bad. The game was won convincingly by the half-time whistle, and it took Worthing, who are not a bad team and have some very good players, until the 80th minute to find an answer to us, even with a following wind, and we also made quite a few chances in the second half and did not give up attacking. The fact that we defensively lost a bit of shape when Trotty went off would have concerned me had Chris Wild played with us a bit more but he hasn't. We also made a few errors, but we did not lose because of them, rather we recovered.

Now, when other teams get wise to this all-out attack and get the game beyond them tactic we may find we have to look at other options, but I am sure Trotty and MF understand that very well. But on the strength of Saturday's game, added to the way we played against Fisher pre-season, I am not sure we will see many games where we have to grind out a result, or defend unto death, this year.

Of course, tonight's game may have me grovelling with apology for this prediction by tomorrow.

I can assure you its me who wants to be wrong, and would love that sort of game every week-all sewn up by half time so we can relax a bit in second half.

Equally, i'm not concerned 'cos things will get better and better i'm also sure.

Aso happy that the defence (aided by midfield) will not have so many gaps in it in future games-we were really open in the centre, and with due deference to the player-manager-i'm sure he will recognise that those gaps were there in first half aswell as the second !!

In hindsight, it was probably a good thing as it did show areas needg a bit of attention; and i also thought Worthing were a good side

Games can turn on an break either way though, and in both Fisher and Worthing games, we could so easily have been 2/3 nil down.(by same token-although not there,we lost against Erith when had we got the breaks, it sounds as though we should have won about 4-1.

One of the things you feel may be a bit different this season though ,is that with guys like LP,RT and McKimm out there, heads will not be allowed to drop when we are up against it.

Hope you see a cracking game again tonight, but for me, any win will do.

'Don't concede the nil'
