Today's game

We lost because York employed the dull but effective tactic of clearing the ball from defence as quickly and as far as possible, using 4 'scrappers' in midfield to close down space.

secondly, with no full backs, we were forced to play 3-5-2 with absolutely no experience on the bench to change the course of the game.

Still glad to see no route 1 stuff stiil.

Hirsty alter Mann'

Interesting to see that some people are complaining about the number of long balls yesterday, while others seem to imply that there were barely any. In truth, with York's defence largely on top, the tactic was resorted to a little too often, but at least it's diminished in frequency compared to most of last season.

Also, many people are claiming that we deserved 'at least a point'. In reality, given that we didn't really put York under any maintained pressure until the last 10-15 minutes, and only forced Evans into one piece of strenuous action all match (i.e. the hand he got to the ball at Moore's feet), we certainly didn't deserve the win, and although we could have snatched a point on another day, York were the better side overall.

Looking at our first three fixtures on paper, though, three points from a possible nine isn't all that bad.

Hirsty please note!!!!

A logical well thought out post, did you notice no infantile snide comments, if you still think i'm a stupid boy for thinking Jon Keeling was our best player on the day please refer to the NLP player ratings, 8/10, only other player with that was Luke Moore.

I should clarify that I am not persay against route 1, there IS a time and place for it, just I do not like it as our only attacking option.
Like most I feel we are more effective passing the ball, getting it wide, getting in low crosses for Charlie and Luke to latch onto.
Route 1 is only effective against the likes of Nathan Bunce, provided the pass evadaes him.

So some newspaper agrees with you and that makes it right?

I actually agree, Kelling played well, and I think he was our man of the match but just because the NLP says so doesn't make it right. Infact some may argue that if the NLP say it's correct it's likely to be different.

Hirsty my man, it is good to know that you now see my point re: Keeling, you know we have the best press in the world, dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

But then again, JC, York only made Cronin save 1 other effort all game as well - Donaldson's earlier effort. Other than that, there was 1 long range shot straight at Cronin and a couple of balls that players just failed to get on the end of - Evans had to take the ball off Luke's toes as you mention, and save one long range effort as well (which he almost fumbled)- again, other than that, our efforts were off target. I would argue that the balance of possession was pretty much 50/50 as were the number of goal efforts - I agree we probably didnt do enough to deserve 3 points, but a draw would probably have been a fair result & 1 which I dont think York could have quibbled over.

Looking at our next three games, I'd say we have a decent chance to put a few points on the board.

Forest Green away - are yet to get off the mark.

Altrincham home - would expect a result.

Southport away - would also be a game you'd expect to get something from.

Hopefully we can do it.

Three games in and to be honest I can't see us finishing any higher than last season

We beat the league's whipping boys last Tuesday and in the other two games let in 4 goals and lost both.

York were a quality Conference side playing perfect "away tactics" tight, solid and well organised, with a clinical finisher up front for the few chances they will create.

As Cloughie once said "you don't play away to entertain the home team's supporters"

Our two forwards toiled away with little or no support from a midfield who were out-muscled and out-played.

And if we are to resort to long ball tactics (forced by the pressure of the other team closing down the Fleet player on the ball), we must sign a big lump of a centre forward to head on or bring down balls for Charlie to finish.

I can't see why anyone would think we would finish higher than last season. I know it now, I knew that three games ago and I knew it three months ago.

All we're trying to do is plod along and hoping some new funds can come into the club, survival is what it is all about for us and considering thats what the majority of the town actually does, survives without living then I can't see why there isn't more of an attraction to come and see them play.

Harry - glad to see someone else here with a "sensible head on"

I think 1,000 attendances will be difficult to maintain with the current squad and the results that it can achieve against better funded, stronger teams.

800 will be our average if we are lucky

We'll be there every week but the "floaters" won't be attracted by the results nor the stadium !

Correct. With a small, reasonably fast strike pairing, balls over the top can work and shouldn't be ruled out, provided that they can be used over the top of a defence high up the pitch, thus allowing the forwards to get in behind.

A fair point, but that may have been because they didn't need to test him more once they had the lead. In truth, the 1-0 lead looked comfortable right from Donaldson's goal up to the last quarter of an hour or so. Then and only then did we look as though we might nick an equalizer.
