Hertford Town V Kentish Town

Recommended Posts

This game was a last minute replacement for the cancelled friendly with Wembley. With Halil Akil, Pablo Ardiles, Kevin Cooper, and Adrian Robinson all unavailable for next Saturday's FA Cup game with Stotfold, they were left out of tonight's game. This allowed other players to stake a claim for places on Saturday.

Team (First Half): 1. Mark Virgo; 2. Ashley McAloon, 3. Tom Neill, 4. Ryan Wade (Capt), 5. Matt Watts, 6. Jamie Nicholson, 7. Leo Turner, 8. Scott Neilson, 9. Paul Dodds, 10. Ryan Redford, 11. Lee Roberts.

(Second Half): 1. James Sturgeon, 2. Nicky Marsh, 3. Mark Teasdale, 4. Ryan Wade, 5. Shaun Toop, 6. Jamie Nicholson, 7. Alex Scriven, 8. Kevin Ashwood, 9. Paul Dodds, 10. Mark Draper, 11. Lee Roberts.

Hertford opened very brightly, with Kentish Town looking totally bewildered by the pace of the Blues' attack. On only 3 minutes Paul Dodds was hacked down in the box, and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. RYAN REDFORD converted with ease to put the home side 1-0 to the good. Hertford could have doubled their tally two minutes later but Reford's cross was plucked out of the air by the visitors' 'keeper. On 8 minutes it was 2-0 though as a good ball from centre midfielder Scott Neilson found Lee Roberts out left and he cut into the box before chipping the ball into the net.

Hertford should have gone 3 up on 12 minutes when another fine build up with Lee Roberts and Ryan Redford led to the latter poking the ball just wide. Redford then missed an easy chance when he ballooned the ball high over the bar, as Kentish Town found it impossible to get out of their own half. When they did attack, they immediately pulled a goal back. Their centre forward, on the edge of the box with his back to goal, hooked a volley over his head and past a startled Mark Virgo for 2-1. Unsighted by his defenders, the Hertford 'keeper could only watch helplessly as the ball looped high over him and into the far top corner.

Geed up by this wonder strike, Kentish Town got more into the game. They conceded a whole string of free kicks to stem the flow of Hertford attacks, and several players were booked as the referee gave up on trying to be generous in a friendly. One of Scott Neilson's precise free kicks had to be tipped over acrobatically by the Kentish Town 'keeper but the game began to degenerate as bad feeling crept into the proceedings. Hertford's only further efforts worthy of note in the half were Ashley McAloon's 32nd minute effort, and a Paul Dodds glancing header well saved by the 'keeper.

Kentish Town's only moment of threat saw Mark Virgo tip the ball over the bar for a corner.

Half Time: Hertford Town 2 Kentish Town 1

Manager Gary Conner made six changes for the second half, leaving no-one on the pitch who had started the Hemel game on Saturday. Most of Hertford's threat came down the right through Alex Scriven, who won a number of corners with his crosses from out wide. Hertford could not capitalise however, Kentish Town offered little threat to the experimental Hertford defence, and although Hertford re-introduced several first half players, they were unable to add to their tally. The game petered out in very disappointing fashion, leaving the few home supporters who witnessed it wondering what sort of side would take the field against Stotfold on Saturday.

Final score: Hertford Town 2 Kentish Town 1

NeutralFan - Interesting report, I met 'H' last night but didn't spot Pablo Ardles, was he at the game. I felt that you caught us a little cold due to the lack of warm up time we had and that contributed to you going 2-0 up after only 8 minutes, that considered you have to admit we did well to only go down 2-1 in the end. Nice that you acknowledge our goal as a 'wonder strike' which is what it clearly was however I didn't notice 'several' players being booked, the Referee was a little on the over zealous side with his yellow card in what was at times a blood and thunder but on the whole fair encounter, we weren't just going to roll over at the end of the day as it was like a cup final to some of our younger lads.

Had to write "several" as I didn't have any numbers to refer to (neither did the ref!) Are you sure it was only 2? What was that about anyway - no numbers? Even Sunday morning pub teams have fully numbered kits these days! Would have given proper credit to your players if I could have identified them.

p.s. Pablo Ardiles is away on holiday.

WareWolf - it's obvious - it was his ball they were using! btw, which one is you in your avatar?

Horace - Well as I told you it was a ploy on our part just incase we incurred any bookings as we had a poor record last season not always of our own making, we have a lot of youngsters in the team who play the game in an old fashioned Billy Bremner, Nobby Stiles, Johnny Giles, Tommy Smith, Peter Storey and Colin Bell style to name a few, hard but fair when it was proper football and you were allowed to tackle whilst ankle, sorry knee, deep in mud Baseball Ground style, bookings were virtually unheard of. Those were the days!

Sorry Horace I forgot to add Ron Harris to that last post! Manic - Yes I got quite a few pics on Tuesday as you probably noticed from the flashing (not literally) every two seconds but they won't be ready until early next week as the camera wasn't digital. I can still e-mail them to you as they come on a disc, I'll be putting them in our programme either next Wednesday or Saturday week so will gladly post a copy to you at the Club. Thanks again for a great night on Tuesday and for your kind hospitality.

Evening all, I appreciate this is probably old news now but just for completeness to finish off this thread I've included our version of the match report and used some of NeutralFan's information if he doesn't mind, I'm sure he won't do me for copyright. Enjoy:

Town were given the wonderful opportunity to play at the salubrious surroundings of Hertford Town’s fine Hertingfordbury Park stadium this evening as last minute replacements for Wembley. Hertford opened very brightly with Town, who had arrived late due to traffic difficulties on the infamous A10, being caught cold by the pace of their opponents attack, on only 3 minutes Hertford’s Paul Dodds was arguably brought down in the box and the Referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot with the kick being clinically despatched by Redford. Hertford could well have doubled their tally two minutes later but Redford's cross was plucked out of the air by Town’s competent keeper, on 8 minutes however it was 2-0 when a good ball from Hertford’s Scott Neilson found Lee Roberts out on the left who cut into the box before chipping the ball deliciously into the net. Hertford should have gone 3-0 up on 12 minutes when a fine build up led to the ball being poked just wide, Redford then missed an easy chance when he ballooned the ball high over the bar causing more danger to passing aircraft than the Town goal. When Town finally settled into their stride following the early Hertford onslaught they immediately pulled a goal back through Baron Charlery when, on the edge of the box with his back to goal, hooked an impossible volley over his head and past a startled Hertford goalkeeper Mark Virgo who was somewhat unsighted by his defenders, not even Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence combined however would have had a prayer of saving it as the ball looped high over Virgo and into the far top corner for what must have surely been one of the best goals, if not the best, ever to be seen at Hertingfordbury Park. Geed up by this wonderful strike Town got more into the proceedings however conceded regular free kicks through their commitment and disappointingly two Town players saw yellow through somewhat over zealous Refereeing for a friendly encounter. A Hertford free kick by Scott Neilson's had to be tipped over acrobatically by Town’s keeper with the only other efforts worthy of note in the half being Hertford’s Ashley McAloon's 32nd minute effort and a Paul Dodds glancing header which was very well saved.

Half Time: Hertford Town 2 Kentish Town 1

Hertford Manager Gary Conner ‘did a Sven’ during the interval making six changes for the second period whilst Town’s players were introduced to new Coach Clement Temile, a former Nigerian International player who played six years for the Super Eagles in the 1980’s including taking part in the final of the African Cup of Nations final in 1984. Most of Hertford's threats in the second half came down the right side through Alex Scriven who won a number of corners with his crosses from out wide however the home side could not capitalise on their lions share of the play with Town offering little threat up front, albeit showing great resistance in defence. The game petered out in somewhat of a scrappy fashion however Town were more than satisfied with their evenings work despite a nasty injury to midfield maestro Thomas Looney which will keep him out for the start of the season.

Full Time: Hertford Town 2 Kentish Town 1

Town now go to Stony Stratford Town on Saturday for their first Spartan South Midlands League Division 1 encounter of the new 2006/2007 campaign in a positive frame of mind and Manager Frank Zanre and new Coach Clement Temile are both confident that three points can be obtained if playing to their true potential.

Not my work I'm afraid, that was the Hertford Town Match report off the website... which is usually compiled by Horace so I can't take any credit there!

Horace - What did you think of my version of events, your comments are conspicuous by their absence particularly on the description of the wonder goal.

Horace - What do you mean fiction, we were all there to witness the goal, you saw it with your own eyes although no doubt like everyone else you had to pinch yourself afterwards. By the way if you're wondering where Paula is she's at Wingate and Finchley this evening but as I say she's already spoken for.

Manic - Don't get your question I'm afraid, you were there so you know who scored, a guy called Baron Charlery who you will be hearing a lot more about this season although he couldn't even get in the team tonight, the Manager rested him. By the way did 'H' play on Tuesday, he e-mailed me saying he was hoping to get a game.

Just thought Hertford Town would like to see an extract from our programme last night where we touched on the friendly at your place showing that we never look a gift horse in the mouth:

'Then last week we were delighted to be given the opportunity by Hertford Town to visit their fine Hertingfordbury Park home when Wembley were unable to fulfil a friendly appointment and we did ourselves proud by only going down 2-1 having trailed 2-0 after only eight minutes of the proceedings. The highlight of the evening was a wonder goal by Town's Baron Charlery who somehow, from 30 yards out, sent an overhead kick into the far top corner of the net before the bemused keeping knew what was happening. We must put on record our sincere thanks to Hertford Town for a wonderful evening spent with them and wish them luck for the season ahead of them in the Premier Division having recently joined the Spartan League from the disbanded Ryman League Division 2 along with Edgware Town, Kingsbury London Tigers and Chalfont St Peter'.
