The Non League Newspaper

Recommended Posts

Thought I would start a thread on articles of interest in the Non League Paper as well as people's views on it. Paula might not thank me for telling you but she had a letter published in it today about, surprisingly enough, Canvey Island. This is something from an anorak on the another site for starters but to be fair it can sometimes be difficult to pick up a copy:

Just wondering if Leicestershire is the only NLP free zone in the country. For the last 2 weeks it has been near enough impossible to buy one on a Sunday and fairly difficult on a Monday. It seems the owners are flooding the shops with their sister paper "The League" and saying "up yours" to its loyal non league followers that have stuck by them through thick and thin. NLP on E-bay anyone.

Paula - Perhaps it was just yesterday's that was so sought after with everyone fighting to get hold of one to read your letter in the Fans Forum section. It was very impressive and I liked the bit about the culture shock visiting Flackwell Heath this season compared to your trips to the likes of Accrington Stanley last season, very true but you'll be getting a reputation if you're not careful, that's if you haven't got one already.

Coupwotcoup - Yes I did and very interesting it was too, sorry for not responding but it has been manic at work today, I'll get back to you later. This thread must be quite appropriate for you bearing in mind what you told me and there is also a Non League paper thread on another's site, clearly the paper is treated as a bible by Non League fans up and down the country.

Coupwotcoup - Sorry I haven't replied to your PM, here is another recent post from the another site indicating that all is not what it should be in the corridors of power at the Non League newspaper headquarters in Wimbledon:

'It is a bit hit and miss lately and as has been reported the type setting or font has been haphazard, sometimes doesn't reach the south coast either. Seriously thinking about stopping taking it due to consistent inaccuracies, I am not going to resume taking the Friday edition anyway 'cos that's often even more unreliable - however the Wessex stuff was correct this Sunday just gone, apart from the fact that Cowes were at home to Hamworthy not t'other way round! I feel it has gradually got more and more Conference orientated and that below Step 5 things seem to be more of a hindrance, a great shame really. The availability of sites such as Tony's, the FA's "Full Time" and league websites means that you can get up to the minute news (well almost!) at the touch of a button'.

Folks - There was a notice in yesterday's Non League Paper as follow:

'Readers in some parts of the country were unable to obtain Sunday's issue of Non League and in other areas some printing was below standard. This was due to technical errors for which we apologise'.

The anoraks on the another Forum will no doubt be over the moon to hear that, I assume most of you don't bother with the Friday edition.

Paula - Did you get hold of your super soaraway edition of Non League on Sunday as I couldn't get one for love nor money, I'll have to complain on that another thread for real anoraks. If anyone has finished with theirs I would be grateful if they could stick it in the post if I PM my address, I wanted to read up on all the FA Cup games such as Bowers and Pitsea v Haringey Borough for example.

I don't know how many of you bought Non League yesterday but it contained the following report on the midweek SSML games although incredibly there was no mention of our 8-2 win over Brache Sparta on Wednesday: 'Edgware Town made it two wins out of two on Tuesday evening with a 3-0 win at Colney Heath. Stuart Blackburne scored the only goal of the first half and a Richard Morton double ensured Town took all three points home with them. They will be satisfied with their 100% start in their new surroundings following relocation from the Ryman League at the end of last season. Chalfont St Peter marked their League debut with a single goal victory at Holmer Green with Bradley Bubb striking in the final minute. Aylesbury Vale were fast out of the blocks at home to Tring and raced into a three goal lead inside the opening quarter of an hour. A Ty North own goal set them on their way, a Danny Jones double increased their advantage before Peter Martin reduced the arrears. Vale had to wait until the final three minutes to add further goals from Stuart Corbould and a hat trick completing Danny Jones penalty to confirm their 5-1 victory. Oxhey Jets won 3-0 at Hertford Town, Wayne Gladdy opened the scoring on the stroke of half time and Jamie Arthur hit a second half brace to complete the win. Jermaine Davey scored twice in the opening five minutes as London Colney took an early command at home to local rivals Leverstock Green but the visitors were level by the break thanks to James Armstrong who responded with his own double both from the penalty spot. There were no further additions to the score in the second period as both teams settled for a point. Langford won by the odd goal in three at Welwyn Garden City, all the goals arrived in the first half. Wesley Byrne and Ricardo Small for the visitors and Danny Fitzpatrick responding for City. In Division One Brimsdown Rovers are the early pace setters with Reece Presthedge hitting a hat trick in a 4-0 home win over Cockfosters to make it ten goals and six points in two games'. Well that's all folks, from that it would appear that Brimsdown could be the danger to us this season, they're at home to Winslow United today whilst we entertain Buckingham Athletic.

Gavin - I should charge you for that information then, say 50p on top of the tenner you still owe me. Where did you go today, I'm not sure if you have mentioned it on another thread, presumably Millwall were away.

  • 2 weeks later...

The following was in yesterday's Non League concerning the midweek games:

The Premier Division's two 100% teams clashed at the White Lion Ground where Edgware Town took on Harefield United and it was the Hares who won with a penalty by Danny Jordan. League newcomers Hertford Town are up to second after a 4-2 win at home to Langford who went into the last 15 minutes 2-1 up thanks to goals from Robert Groves and Lee Pateman. Then Hertford produced a stirring comeback levelling through Kevin Cooper's penalty and then sealing the points with late strikes by Ryan Redford and Lee Roberts. Chalfont St Peter were another side to come from behind to seal maximum points as they won 2-1 at Tring Athletic. Phil Otum gave Tring the early lead before Bradley Bubb equalised on the hour and Adam Bruce scored the goal that sends the Saints into third spot. Leverstock Green and Oxhey Jets played out a 1-1 draw at Pancake Lane, a result that maintains both sides unbeaten start to the season. Jamie Arthur for Oxhey midway through the first period before Adam Hallissey ensured a share of the spoils for Leverstock with his injury time leveller. Elsewhere London Colney are up to fourth thanks to Frankie Jowle's 80th minute winner at Holmer Green while Aylesbury Vale were another side to come from behind, Ross Taylor's strike securing the points in a 2-1 win at Colney Heath. Mickey Swaysland's injury time penalty stole the points for Ruislip Manor as they won 2-1 at Haringey Borough and St Margaretsbury recorded their first win of the season as they beat Welwyn Garden City away, 3-1.

The Non-League paper carried the following yesterday on the London ASPA and Colney Heath FA Vase fiasco:

A Club could be booted out of future FA Vase competitions following a 'coats for goals' row which led to their first qualifying round game not taking place. SSML side Colney Heath were left aghast after travelling 90 minutes to play Essex Senior League outfit London ASPA last Saturday - only to find that the pitch had not been marked out. 'There was not one single line on the pitch and neither of the goal nets were up' said furious Colney Heath Secretary Daniel Burr. 'There were just two goals standing in the middle of the grassed area without any marking whatsoever, the Referee called the game off there and then and he had every reason to do so'. Burr was even more angry that the FA have not kicked Lonson ASPA out of the competition, but merely ordered the game to be played away, at Colney Heath on tuesday, kick off 7.45. London ASPA's pitch is in the middle of the athletics track at the Terrence McMillan Stadium in Prince Regent Lane, Newham, which is owned and maintained by Newham Council. If London ASPA win the game, future home ties will be allowed only if the stadium and pitch have been inspected and approved by the league. The Club have also been reported to the full FA Vase Committee for a breach of competition rules and could lose their place in future competitions as a result. However, it appeared that a mix up by the local Council was to blame. London ASPA programme editor Zabeer Khan said 'It is up to the Council's leisure services department to mark out the pitch and for some strange reason this was not done'. This all smells a bit fishy to me, the same thing happened to us at Wembley FC earlier in the season and the Referee sensibly just delayed the kick off until the lines could be marked out.

HTFCew - Well I was going to touch on that but didn't want to risk yet another slapped wrist for a long 'insignificant' post. There must surely have been a line machine at the stadium as was the case at Wembley with us or else one could have been obtained from somewhere such as the nearby Mile End Stadium if, as I say, common sense had prevailed and the kick off could have been delayed.
