Witham 3-5 Billericay

Strange game, marred by a bad injury to Billy McMahon and a hapless performance from the officials.

Team:

McMahon

Vincent McSweeney Dormer Kerrigan

Hunter Heffer Ryan

Hodges

Elder Morgan

Subs

Game for Hdoges

Wooster for McMahon

Skelton for Vincent

Collins for Ryan

SNU: Poole, Scoburgh, Prout

Started with the formation above with Hodges in a free role behind the strikers - left us a little exposed down the flanks imho - when Game came on midway through the 1st half we went to a more orthodox 4-4-2 which looked more solid.

Triallists

Danny Morgan ex Daggers

Nick Skelton young CB from Southend

Went behind when a corner was half cleared following a goalmouth scramble and Nicky Smith lashed it back in.

Awarded a pen when their left back adjudged to have pulled back Nathan - for my money it was outside the area (initially at least) - Leon Missed.

Game stopped for for Macca to receive treatment when Billy keeled over - ambulance on pitch 20 minute hold up. TC went in the ambulance with Bill, apparently got clattered in the goalmouth scramble for their goal and had concussion

soon after re start we're level - corner into box - Dorms hooked in after Nathan's header had hit him

ht 1-1

Nathan made it 2-1 early in the 2nd half with a good finish, then Matt Game arrived late in the box to finish a Ryan cross 3-1

Quickly back to 3-2 - penalty awarded for a pull apparently, although their player made little effort to stay on his feet - C.Ronaldo would have been proud

Game made it 4-2, then Dorms got his 2nd to make it 5-2. Te ref made it a hat-trick of bad penalty decisions to allow them to make it 5-3 - their players in the bar didn't know what it was for! The ref then blew up just as Morgan was about to score for ft...

I Thought it was a good performance by us. If you look at the result you'll wonder but the ref and the lino obviously wanted to be the centre of attention in the last 20 minutes. And if the ref had dealt with their No. 14 when he'd gone thoriugh Wozzer, there wouldn't had been the incident with Dave Collins.

Our No. 10 looked quite good as well...

The incident with Billy was certainly a shock and I wish him a speedy recorvery. I heard that it was delayed concussion and that the hospital may keep him in over night for observation but other than that he is fine.

Oh and the result of Chelmsfords bench mark game was 3 - 1 to Winvenhoe...

Apart from the injury to Billy I thought this was our most pleasing pre-season effort.

The lad who started up front looked very sharp and we looked much more potent in the final third than in previous games.

Heffer looks more effective in midfield than in defence and that looks the best option to me but I suppose that depends on availability and injuries etc.

We could have rattled in any amount in the second half and I think it's fair to say that only some comedy officiating brought the scoreline close together.

If Bill's gonna miss a few games perhaps Matt should get on the phone to Justin and borrow one of his keepers for a month.

A much more positive feel after todays game I felt and at least the friendlies are out of the way now!!

I think we now know 8 or 9 of our starting XI for next week (more than at this time last season...) but not necessarily where they'll play.

I think we've looked at our most solid defensively when Macca has played centre back, so perhaps we should be looking to push Heffer into midfield. If we do that then we need a "front line" right back - Vincent has done OK, but I can't see him playing 40+ games there.

Midfield looks strong, possibly over staffed so I expect strong competition for places there...

Up front is an interesting one. impressed with Morgan today, no question he's been the pick of the triallist strikers. I'm a fan of Flack, but he badly needs to get himself fit if he's going to be a major player for us as there is suddenly pressure on his place, particularly if Morgan signs.

I would certainly agree Simon, we have a better idea who our starting XI are this season than last.

Danny Morgan is a very abitious player and I would've preferred to have blooded him at a home friendly to show him more of the club and the way it works and it's people but alas not to be. I would certainly like to think we have a chance of signing him.

I'm certainly a little more confiedent than I was a week ago...

Not really but then again, I read that your players didn't want to get injured...and didn't try.

Still...I think we have the measure of the thoughts that some of your (un) reliably informed commentators of BTFC would have made of that if it was us on the recieving end, eh BC?

Omitting the Billy incident for a moment, the game was the most entertaining of all the preseasons i have seen. I also like the look of this Morgan. His finish at the end which would have made it 6 was excellent, but his running off the ball and taking defenders with him was superb. An example of that was when he took a defender away thus allowing Gamo to net. I thought Leon showed total commitment to the cause and got stronger after his penalty miss! Defensively we need to be more ascertive in clearing the ball imo, but the overall performance of the team was encouraging, in what was quite a physical second half. Wozza was certainly up for it!

Now to Billy. Gotta say i have never seen anything like that happen live before, and it was a worrying sight, but thankfully all seems fine. As a thought i wonder if Billy would have saved their goal (although a great strike) if he did not have (unbeknown) to us at the time concussion.

Thanks Navyblue...I believe Ryan has some good ones as well...I definately hope he has the one of Gameo scoring his first...The one I missed (it's difficult getting those pictures...Ryan seems to be developing (pun) the knack of getting those piccies). My particular favorite of this bunch is Wozzer having a crack at goal...

With Ryan and I taking our cameras, the programme should be well stocked with pictures.

I like the new kit (although I was a little vocal about the "red" in the shirt when I was first shown it).

Great pics Gazz, my fav has to be the Gameo one.

He gives his oppo the eyes right whilst neatly dragging the ball left.

Yeah...I have quite a few of Gameo from that match but I think picked the best. Ryan may have a better one tho...Looking forward to seeing if he got the "goal" shot...

Not a bad haul from a game that didn't offer much as far as "shots" due to the weather (digital cameras don't like the rain).
