live commentry v aldershot

UP FLEET

Recommended Posts

Its becoming a regular occurance with last minute goals at the rec, if I am not mistaken that 3 times on the bounce we have lost to them.

But I for one was encouraged after watching today , we actually had players on the pitch that looked comfortable with the ball at their feet and know how to play the game.

Unfortunately the sending offs adversely impacted us more than them, with their 2 goals scored from balls whipped in from behind our vacant left back position. ( First LB off injured , second LB sent off)

But we created chances , Charlie Mac on another day could have had 2 or 3 , so not all bad.

Danny Ekoku also showed some good touches up front but did not look match fit, so hopefully there is more to come from him.

Lance in goal, kept us in at when Aldershot came at us early , and was unlucky with their 3rd.

All in all , despite the defeat, I am looking foward to the season with renewed enthusiasm. I think Debolla if continues like today, will become a star for us.

Just a pity about our woeful away support.

Agree with Wobbly. Debolla looked excellent first-half, his fantastic goal notwithstanding. Cronin was very good first-half too, and though Keeling was a touch quiet, he looked exciting. All the new players seemed to fit in and injuries and suspensions aside, this lot 'should' improve on last year's squad.

But even if the new first XI is better than last year's (and only time will tell whether or not this is the case), 'injuries and suspensions aside' is a major caveat - they're inevitable, as yesterday proved, and the lack of strength in depth on the bench at the moment is a real concern. Therefore, the standard of our loan signings will play a significant role in determining whether our squad as a whole, not just the team, really can be better than last season's.

True, but when hasn't that been the case in the Conference? With the likes of Hawkins, Ricketts and DeBolla, Daish has clearly signed utility players that can slot in when injuries and sendings off occur... of course, that's not as ideal as having back-up squad players in those positions and as you say, loan players are going to have to plug those gaps.

Meanwhile, the players will have to have it drummed into them not to commit stupid offences - Ekoku was very lucky not to see red for raising his arms in the second half. It would have been a poor sending off, but by the letter of the law, I expected him to walk.
