Peter Shoedindie

Recommended Posts

Just to pish Rhodes off I'll start a new thread.

I don't really recall Lurch in goal for you but I got told later he played. I recall Shoedindie mainly because of his name and mainly because he was good. We were crap in the late 70s and most teams beat us (apart from Chertsey and Fleet) but for some reason we alway seemed to play Edgware in midweek (6.15 pre floodlights kickoff)and you beat us easily.

You also had that clapped out looking team coach..surely that still isn't around.

I vaguely remember the coach, no they have a smart teambus now with Edgware Town FC screenprinted along it. I remember teams like Redhill who we always beat, the big club was Billericay who always brought loads with them. We beat them at home just days before they were in the VAse final, I think they made it to 3 finals in 4 years.

I am going to see if I can find an online pic of my hero from those days

EDGWARE TOWN 3 - TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 4

7th November 1979

To mark the official opening of the floodlights at the White Lion ground, Edgware played a Tottenham Hotspur side in early November 1979 watched by a crowd of about 600. The match was to have been played a year earlier but it was postponed owing to heavy rain. Spurs included four players with first team experience, goalkeeper Mark Kendall, defender Terry Naylor and forwards Colin Lee and Mark Falco.

Edgware took the lead after 10 minutes when captain Mick Smith headed home and after 27 minutes it was 2-0 when George MacKenzie scored from a suspiciously offside position. Ray Fulton, formerly with West Ham and Leyton Orient, was in great form and reserve goalkeeper, Brian Grealish was called upon to make several saves as Tottenham realised they had to battle hard against a determined Edgware side. After 40 minutes Falco reduced the deficit and in the space of three minutes early in the second half, goals from Debenham and Gibson put the Spurs 3-2 ahead. Peter Shoedinde equalised with a magnificent goal following good play from Johnny Fitzpatrick and Greg Shumake and a draw would have been a fair result.

However, with only four minutes left for play, Terry Gibson hit the winner for Spurs. Edgware’s President, John Fanning, said, “It was all worth waiting for. Spurs did us proudly tonight and I was pleased our lads put on such a skilful display.”

EDGWARE : B. Grealish, J. Rowland, M. Barry, M. Smith,J. Fitzpatrick, R. Fulton, G. MacKenzie, G. Shumake, L. Holmes, B.Elliott, P. Shoedine. Substitute: M. Crossan

In the 1979-80 season, Edgware played in the Kingsmead Athenian League finishing tenth out of twenty teams.

..

Ah the Kingsmead Athenian league, it seems like only yesterday:)

I remeber going to my first away games, in the players cars, or team bus. Fleet Town, Burnham, or was it Banstead? Corinthian Casuals in the FA cup at Tootings old ground. and Welling UTD in the cup as well. Not bad for a kid of 11

Sounds a good game.

I remember from around the same time we somehow manged to have arranged a home pre season friendly with Millwall. Most of the local police force descended on Grosvenor Vale in a fleet of riot vans in their usual subtle manner to deal with expected trouble makers but nobody materialised as the Millwall first team were playing away and I thnk they sent a youth selection to us. accompanied by no fans. The large phalanx of police armour then had to somewhat unceremoniously try and depart without being noticed.
