I find the world of a non league supporter a strange one, its a world where rumour and gossip become real and facts are disregarded.

For example, when the season kicked off two seasons ago, we were the big spenders, we had all the cash and would be buying our way to the title.

Last season, we were "one of" the big spenders, along with Heybridge, Briantree, and Fisher.

This season, we are the poor boys, cutting budgets, going bust, not being able to compete, and mediocre at best.

Yet the fact is,...wait for it....can you guess?... the playing budget this season is exactly the same as last season....and....you know what...its exactly the same as it was two seasons ago.

When, two seasons ago we said, actually, no, we’re not spending loads, we're developing a young team for the future, and maintaining a sensible budget...they laughed.

In "their" world we were the BIG spenders and that was the real truth.

And this year in "their" world, we are going bust, cutting costs, and unable to compete for a top spot.

Its a funny ole game

My comments are in general and not aimed at any specific supporter/s or club/s

I dont know the full story but gather than when you took over the club they were pretty much in the s*it.

In this regard to take your club to the play offs then nearly getting there last season is a good achievement.

If your budgets have remained then you will also acknowledge that there are a lot of clubs "going for it" this season again, clubs that havent sniffed ricays a*se in the past 2 seasons.

But I do think that for at least one of these clubs it will pay off and they will win the league. You have to accept that Billericay in terms of crowds have either reached their peak or are close to their peak at 500ish,

Your probably not going to attract too many more people that dont know about your club already so the room for expansion this way is limited.

I dont want to go all BBB on you but last season we had 7 1,000+ crowds and this was with ateam in mid table.

If as I and most other fans expect we are in a much better position to challenge this season then we will probably attract 15 1,000+ crowds.

Money generates money and the knock on effects on food, drink, merchandising are going to make us a club that can then afford to up their budgets,

The same goes for AFC W and Margate.

I cant help but think that as much as you are doing to build an infrastructure you will always be trumped by "money" clubs

Hmmmmm....

I disagree that Billericay have reached a peak...membership, altho not growing at Chelmsford's level a la move to Melbourne Park (lets call it road to Melbourne Park, like Saul's Road To Damascus), is growing. We do have the potential to pick up fair weathered supporters like any other team if we do well this season (in any season). Whereas I would freely admit that we may struggle to get over 1,000 in such a season, we would certainly not be far off.

Like any club that has a "history" of being well supported (and we have) when it does well, it picks up support.

Another arguement used here is that support = success. With large crowds come a better position in the league...Well, it certainly didn't help Margate and as you said 7 1,000 + gates still didn't get you above mid table. You've got a new manager and a new team built from players that are certainly experienced but are not at the prime of their career...they older players may well suffer from recurring injuries and leave Chelmsford short on the pitch of the much required experienece that the younger players require. Obviously the mighty pound has been the lure. Loyalty and with that pride in the club that they play for has been as much as a lure for our players. Also, how they are treated by the club. Lets not forget, some clubs pay big but may not treat their players as well.

I think there is a lot to say about being patient and building a team that relies of a mix of developing youth and expereience over "buying" success. The former relies on sorting out the foundation of the squad and the development of the club although it does rely on the patience of the supporter (and we're not the most patient of people), whilst the latter pampers to the hunger for success at any cost and, if and when troubled times come along, the club falls like a house built on sand.

It's an interesting arguement and one that will always come up despite the questions being answered during the past and future seasons.

Now, I wonder if I can get any more biblical metaphors in my other posts.

We've peaked with our 500 crowds, LOL! There was me thinking we averaged 542 last season which saw us for the majority of it mid-table and deprived of any decent cup run. Our history says that this club can also pull the crowds in, Chelmo are not the only club with potential. Put your [****!!****] away Sean!

We did indeed average 542 but then again, there was the away support to consider...

...something Chelmsford don't appear to consider as there is no club that is as big as them in Essex (See Claret Banter and the poll "Who Is The Biggest Club In Essex - I beleive Chelmsford won it, Southend came second - PML).

I think you missed my point it wasn't about Billericay, Chelmsford, jelousy, or c**k waving.

I dont dissagree with you, big money will always win out in the end. So who in your opinion has got the biggest playing budget, and will they win the league?

I did understand that your posting was about perceptions and not having a dig at anyone in particular, I was just giving my perception back.

biggest budget. I would think AFC W must be right up there and id expect them to finish top 2 or 3 yes

Oh,.ok. I just thought that as you mentioned Billericay in the first five paragraphs and then went on to tell us of Chelmsford’s expected large crowds, you may have misunderstood what my posting was about.

Yep AFC will be the ones to beat; I reckon H & R will be up there to, although I don't think they will have the same funds available as you or AFC.

The funny thing about non league is that no-one knows how anyone is going to do. Yes, you would EXPECT any team who has splashed a wad load of cash on players to achieve, but then i remember Aldershot/Canvey/Daggers/Gravesend all having more cash than most and it took them all roughly 3 years each to get outta the "old" Ryman Prem. Personally, Jamie Dormer summed up a player who wants to "play" for the shirt the other night when he was joking with the crowd after his penalty save <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> And that was before he stepped up to secure victory.
